Book Description

Just over a decade into our future, America is a stricken country where jobs are scarce, health care is a luxury for the wealthy, and hope rides on the annual Gauntlet games—a punishing physical and mental competition where the victor brings not only pride but an economic windfall back to his or her home state.

In the 2023 games, former police detective turned paramedic Lara Evans represents Oregon. But the contest’s notorious obstacles and cutthroat rivalry may be the least of her challenges. After saving a government bureaucrat’s life—and literally dodging a bullet—she finds herself in the crosshairs of a relentless hit man. And when another Gauntlet contestant is murdered, a stroke of bad luck puts Lara on the wrong end of damning evidence.

Still, the games must go on. And with the country, the law, and a killer watching her every move, Lara must use all her strength and savvy to beat the odds, claim the prize, and win back her life in the most dangerous game of all.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't want to put it down! 11 Sept. 2011
By Jackie
Format:Kindle Edition
I decided to start reading this e book last night, and as soon as I started I knew I was hooked. I knew I was in for a long night and I was right.

The hero of the hour is Lara, she was a police officer for 16 years and is now a freelance paramedic, the year is 2023 and she is to take part in the annual contest "The Gauntlet". As Lara is female and the oldest competitor, she is not ranking too highly, but she knows she has put the work in and has the experience behind her. The day before she is due to travel to the contest, and when on a call out, she is shot at as she arrives on the scene, on entering the property she find the Federal Employment Commissioner alive but with a large bullet hole in his shoulder!

When Lara arrives at the competition site, she is taken aback to spot the shooter, and wanders if he has followed her to the competition to finish the job......... And then the action really starts with Lara taking part in the gruelling competition - which needs all of her wits, intelligence as well as strength and stamina - dealing with the other competitors, murder and mayhem with a little romance thrown in for good measure.

At the same time, we are reading about events taking place months ago from a seemingly unrelated story, we actually bob back and forth between the here and now to the past as it all comes together in an explosive ending.

Nothing has been said if there will be more novels with Lara, can I request, pretty please, that there be more, I finished reading the book and wanted more, that says it all for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slightly peckish games 28 Jun. 2013
By someone
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I gave up on this book after about 30% because it just didn't keep me interested enough to care. It's almost a very mild version of the hunger games, where the version of society is difficult (but not extreme like Hunger Games' district 12). The Gauntlet itself is tough but is more like an army assault course meets big brother reality TV. The drama of the story is based around a killer so it's a detective/crime thriller featuring this Gauntlet.... I don't know. I tried to enjoy it but ultimately there wasn't enough tension or mystery to keep me reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing read 13 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read all the Detective Jackson books was very disappointed with this book. Set in the future yet no explanation given as to why there are no jobs for example. The ending was rushed - as if the author got as bored writing the story as I was reading it and yet, there was a much more interesting sub-plot barely hinted at. In summary - badly plotted, poorly written - one could be forgiven for thinking that this was a book that the author began many years ago, half finished and has now been dragged out of the cupboard and hastily completed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well plotted indeed. 25 Sept. 2011
By Shaun Horrigan TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The year is 2023. Lara Evans is an ex-police officer, currently working as a freelance paramedic. Describing herself as "forty-two, no partner, no children, no power" she has dreams of changing that as she has qualified for the national finals of "The Gauntlet" the country's most popular reality TV program where representatives from each state compete in competitions of mental and physical skill and prowess with the winner taking a huge reward for the economy of their home state.

Meanwhile, several months earlier, Paul Madsen, an overweight, early thirty's computer programmer with serious self image issues, daydreams of dating his beautiful colleague Camille, and the latest programming job he has been given has given him an idea as to how he might make this daydream a reality.

What struck me straight away with this story is how professional the plot feels. With two interleaved stories that link together and drip feed you the clues, it feels very well put together indeed. All the clues are there if you want to try and work them out, and if not, then the revelations relating to the various plot twists and turns are nicely handled as well.

Kindle layout and presentation also feels very professional with very few mistakes of any description in the entire book.

Overall: 4 stars - I enjoyed this story and finished it in two evenings. The author's interpretation of our world in 2023 is believable, if slightly conservative. The story is fast paced and very well plotted and I would happily read a follow up if the author decides to write one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable but..... 12 May 2014
By sangwin
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This combination tale of a ruthless psychotic killer and a simpler version of hunger games fell between two stools .It could have been thriller cop chase or futuristic view of political funding . In the end it only half satisfied which was a pity as the writing style was good on the whole and did draw in the reader.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hunger Games for Adults? 10 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not really - but you can see similarities

Set around the Gauntlet - this is an average crime thriller - which is predictable well before the end

Worth reading?

Well I got it for free and therefore it was worth it, but it did not inspire me to read more by the same author - so perhaps not
Having said that there are a lot worse books out there and if you have a spare afternoon then you could do worse

3.0 out of 5 stars First time read of this author. 7 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found the plot somewhat heavy going. I normally enjoy other plot weavers such as John Grisham and Ken Follett etc but - maybe it was me. only 60% for this one in my opinion.
