Amazon Verified Purchase
Absolutely superb arena concert by The Gathering recorded in Santiago, 2007. To think I once saw them play some pokey little club in London for about an hour. Here we get a two hour retrospective, so all the favourites from their hard rock / prog metal days are covered, together with amped-up renditions of the more recent ambient-rock material.
As expected, all my attention was on Anneke; vocally resplendent, she copes well with what is a very demanding set list. If I could change one thing, well, a small gripe, but a second guitarist wouldn't hurt to help clarify the rhythm and lead material. In fact Anneke plays a guitar on a couple of numbers, one being a hugely self-indulgent performance of the rare Black Light District.
They really made it. A hugely important, inspirational band that openly defied being pigeonholed and were able to metamorphose like caterpillar to butterfly. They deserve to be much better known in the UK, so if you think you might enjoy a Dutch band with an original slant on the English language, strong female vocals and an atmospheric blend of guitar and keyboards, then dive right in. Check out You Tube to sample at least one number from A Noise Severe.

Having been very impressed with the studio offerings I had high hopes for this live DVD. Unfortunately my confidence that The Gathering could reproduce their classy and distinctive material before a live audience was sadly misplaced. The guitar overpowers the vocals and all else to such an extent that the result is, well, just noisey. Compared with live DVD offerings from Nightwise and Within Temptation (where its sometimes hard to tell the live from studio) the sound quality here is poor. A shame.

One of the most superb band DVDs I have ever seen. I love the Gathering, but as Annique has left this is a great record of them performing at their collective best, however the Live show apart what really makes this DVD stand out is the documentary on Disc 2. Often these are badly thrown together mish mash pieces. Not here, a moving and very warm record of the processes in the creation of their last album with Annique - Home. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough, the masters of melodic Doom Metal at their VERY best.
