The main player in the Gathering for me, is the former-Lindisfarne front man, Ray Jackson. There is a re-make of three Lindisfarne songs, one of which, Lady Eleanor, was always an Alan Hull sung song. However Ray makes a good stab at it, as he does with the re-makes of, This Has Got To Be The End and Kings Cross Blues, the former two being Jackson co-writes. The fact that this group now plays Kings Cross Blues is great, because Lindisfarne stopped playing this excellent song live, after the Kings Cross station fire many years ago. On the unfortunate subject of fire, the opening track, Fire On The Line is a very good folk song, with the bonus of excellent Jackson harmonica playing. These guys and gal, have a fine folk pedigree and the playing is excellent and is a warm sounding record. Jerry Donahue, plays a very fine guitar, not unlike Mark Knopfler, but does not dominate the band in the same way. His daughter, Kristina (vocals) is also in the band. The vocals are good in the folk-style tradition, with Kristina adding an upper range to the older guys. I am not sure if all of the songs are re-makes, as I am not familiar with the history of the other songs, but they do fit the band extremely well. Overall a good listen and more folk than rock. Unfortunately the album lacks the five star rating I would have liked to have given it. However, a good start and look forward to some originals next time (Mr Jackson!).
