Product Description

Product Description

At the southern tip of Africa lies one of the most spectacular paradoxes of nature - the proximity of the lush rainforest belt known as the Garden Route and the semi-desert known as the Little Karoo. This book explores the intricacies of each of these natural worlds and the history, conflict and tragedy in which they are steeped, reaching back far into the past. It describes in literal and lyrical terms the interdependence of different forms of life (the region's ecology) and the impact of people, residents and visitors alike on the fragile landscape. It offers an insight into the the nature of the many wildlife inhabitants of this region - birds, fish and mammals (including the last surviving elephants) - and their interactions with humans.

A wonderful book 18 Jan 2006
By Mrs L
Format:Hardcover
This is truly a magical book and would make a wonderful gift. In coffee-table format, with lovely photographs and illustrations, and simply packed with fascinating information and anecdotes about the Klein Karoo and the Garden Route, it is in some ways reminiscent of the famous TV Bulpin books.

It really enriched my last visit to the area even though I as a South African have travelled extensively in SA and have been to the region before. Don't travel to this region without reading it first!

We had a great trip to a great country and wanted to remember it, a great book to leave out in the lounge / conservatory for other peopl to look at as well as ourselves, worth the money.

The book was exactly as described - new. Since the book is about South Africa, the UK has more vendors than the US. I purchased from a US vendor in order to speed the shipping. The process worked perfectly.
