Review

"Talented to the point of rare originality" (Independent)

"An expert at conveying the kind of apparently inconsequential detail that might be the moment of definition in someone's life" (Times Literary Supplement)

"The stories have a strange, fairy-tale quality: the simple, beautiful prose, the sense of inevitability, the use of allusion and metaphor to suggest undercurrents of disturbing portent" (Selina Hastings Daily Telegraph)

"Her talent is at its best" (Susan Hill)

"A quintessentially English writer - her work has a charm and finesse, a civilised irony" (Guardian)

Format: Paperback
This had been on my shelves for a while - bought because I know Tremain is excellent from past reads, too long ignored because of the restrictions of time. Yet this collection of short stories perfectly illustrates her astounding imagination, wide-reaching inspiration and skilful, understated prose. For students of short story writing this is a must - marvel at her deft management of character, setting, emotion and plot (never dull). It's a damned good read and, unlike other short story collections, you'll want to devour it in one go. The story from which the book takes its name follows the unsettling and insatiable appetites of a selfish 19th century opera singer who veers violently between lusting for plump and skinny women. Other stories describe the discovery of a couple's incestous secret, the tragic consequences of a woman's search into a martyr's life, the man who collects voices... Try it and you won't be disappointed.

Bought this as a Christmas gift for a Rose Tremain addict. Although the recipient doesn't usually like short stories, she loved this collection.
