Reviews

Bill Maynard (Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt) is Fred Moffat, the tight-fisted yet quick-thinking director of a small light-engineering firm, in this cleverly scripted, bittersweet sitcom. The recession is biting, and the Gaffer finds himself under siege from the taxman, his creditors, his bank manager... and just about everyone else. He sometimes resorts to extreme measures to keep his head above water, and is permanently at odds with militant shop steward Harry (Russell Hunter - Callan). But glamorous secretary Betty (Pat Ashton) is always around to lighten the mood even if she rarely succeeds in getting Harry and Fred to see eye-to-eye... Presented here are all three series of this hugely popular sitcom from Yorkshire Television.

This truly a five star rated series with 20 well crafted scrips written by Graham White. Bill Maynard and Russell Hunter Star. I was disappointed with the Selwyn Froggett series, the Gaffer may be one of the best 80s series I have ever seen , should give the under 50s a look working conditions in the 70s 80s working in one of the many thousands of small factories spread thougthout the UK.Well worth the money, scores of good one liners from the brilliant scrips

Just like Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt, I thought The Gaffer was absolutely brilliant. This sitcom centred around Fred Moffat, the owner of Moffat Engineering Company Ltd, brilliantly played by Bill Maynard. There was also a fine supporting cast consisting of the late Russell Hunter as shop steward Harry Campbell, Pat Ashton as Moffat's secretary Betty, and Don Crann as Charlie. Very highly recommended indeed.

Not a bad show, it certainly has its moments. But it is not the ball-bouncingly funny show that "Oh No, It's Selwyn Froggit" and its sequel "Selwyn" both are. This is more light comedy, yet Bill Maynard's forte had always been Carry On style humour and he is a little out of place in this show. Russell Hunter (Lonely in Calan) on the other hand is well cast as the troublesome shop steward. I like the gimmick with the opening credits changing slightly for each episode, but Maynard was better as Selwyn Froggit. Yes, and as Green Grass as well!

Watched this programme when first relesed on TV, forgot how funny it was, pity they only made 3 series, Bill Maynard took some of this role when he was Greengrass in heartbeat. Programme that you can watch over and over.

More roguishly unsophisticated comedy that in truth is not far removed from todays reality. The corner cutting scheming character is superbly played; even with tongue in cheek. i met many like that!
