DVD Description

A team of scientists gather together to try and predict what the world could be like if modern civilization is wiped out. It tells the story of the future of our planet through three future time periods. The first four programmes are set 5 million years from now, the next four are set in 100 million years and the last four are set in 200 million years from now. In addition, there is an overview episode introducing the whole series, making 13 episodes in total.

Created on the basis of real biological and evolutionary theories provided by a group of eminent scientists and using the latest animation techniques, THE FUTURE IS WILD brings to life the natural world yet to come. Creatures and places are named, ice-ages are predicted, and cataclysmic events unfold when THE FUTURE IS WILD!

The basic premise of this series is what the world would look like in 5 million, 100 million and 200 million years in the future if humans were taken out of the equation. Each of the thirteen parts of this series details a single ecosystem from one of the three time periods and tells you about the weird and wonderful plants and animals that live there. As well as this the program also lets you into the minds of the scientists that predicted these creatures, using contemporary animals as a starting point and extrapolating the likely evolutionary forces that will affect them to create the animals of the future. The graphics used to bring these future worlds to life are great, combining CGI with film and photography to produce some beautiful vistas, though there are some inconsistencies when CGI creatures interact with this environment but this is only to be expected. I would say that this is a must buy for anyone interested in evolution or the natural world.

This is a TV series which sets to hypothesise what might be living on the Earth thousands to millions of years from now... The immediate question is "How can anyone possibly know?". Well, they don't. The point is to make educated guesses at what may exist, and this it does well. The creatures are all based on modern day or even extinct species, and have been suitably altered and placed in an environment of the future. Rudimentary but acceptable computer graphics are used to show the animals in their 'narural' habitats. It is narrated, and also has insights from biologists and zoologists who suggest how the animal might live. All very questionable, but still entertaining.

This is an intriguing series except perhaps for classical Christian and other anthropocentric monotheists-The idea of prophetic developments derives naturally from the detective naturalism of Darwin and others reconstructive theories from the vantage point of our relative cultural present and presence.
The possible creatures are not merely as weird as the grotesque fantasies of Science Fiction but are a kind of literal Sci-Fi themselves and the series theme follows the pessimistic trend of various recent apocalyptic disaster and empty world forecast films-Some of the Scientists seem notably eccentric and are excellent entertainment in their own right but there is also much lengthy interessant and provocative information and speculation to digest as well as the spectacle of the bizarre beasts to observe which is oddly redolent of those hybrid animals mediaeval artists were wont to offload skeches of,on vellum...There are seven good extras including an interview and the whole thing is excellent for the curious and imaginative mind that wonders as much about Outer and Inner Time as it does about Space and the Cosmos,Both Micro and Macrocosmic-I didn't find the computer graphics too rough and the series is digestible episode by episode-I highly recommend it as a superior edutainment.
