Product Description

Product Description

Over the last two decades the growth of the financial services industry has been explosive. It has had to adapt to a host of new phenomena as they arise including regulatory issues, risk management, new technology, globalization, consolidation and branding. This volume presents the opinions and predictions of the chief operators within the banking industry - the people dealing with these phenomena and leading change. The book offers insight and interpretation from knowledgable people in the business, featuring interviews with each of these practitioners. It also provides an analytical summary of the current and future trends and concerns highlighted by them.

About the Author

Henry Engler is a member of Reuters Strategic Planning Group in London. He was previously a journalist for Reuters, covering financial markets and economic developments in New York, Brussels and London. Prior to joining Reuters he was an economist with Chemical Bank in New York, specialising in US monetary and fiscal affairs.  James Essinger has been a professional writer on banking and business since 1986, and has chronicled most of the leading-edge developments in the retail and wholesale banking sectors, including the proliferation of shared ATM networks, the launch of EFTPoS, the move to electronic quote-driven financial markets and the rise of internet banking. He lectures and consults widely on strategic and tactical aspects of retail and wholesale banking and on banking technology. James has published more than thirty business books, including Breakthrough Consulting, published by Financial Times Prentice Hall. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

The authors are able to interview senior members of the banking world on a variety of issues. Although there is good coverage on a variety of issues here, there is possibly more in depth conversations about regulation and less about other issues within the banking industry. However it should be said that they do discuss those remaining issues, albeit in less detail.

The highlight of the book however is the introduction where it covers all issues facing the banking industry and possible trends over the last few years. A good introduction for many starters and enables a more informed reader to focus on the real issues facing the industry.

I was attracted by the concept of this book - go out to a variety of financial industry CEOs and get their view on where they see the sector evolve in a number of fields (retail, asset management, technology, risk,...). The first part of the book is a wrapup of the themes filtered out of the interview. For me this part does not deliver enough deep content, and therefore does not add much to the book. The second part - the interviews - is a lot better on the content. Nevertheless, the book is poorly edited. An unacceptable number of typos, gramatically badly constructed sentences, too much verbatim quotation of the CEOs,... Hopefully possible future editions of the book will improve on this part.

Excellent overview of US and European banking trends 14 Nov 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is a nice compilation of a set of interviews with the heads of some of Europe, Asia and America's largest banks. The interviewer does a nice job of keeping a few strong threads (technology, risk, globalization) running through the interviews while allowing each discussion to probe different challenges and opportunities.

This book could have been better if it probed the technology issues a little deeper. It appears that the interviewer may not have been adept in this area.

I would highly recommend this book for people looking to get a clear, broad understanding of banking trends and strategies without getting mired in terminology or esoteric banking processes.
