Brian de Palma’s first big-budget film for a major studio, The Fury is at times another triumph of Kirk Douglas’ ego over promising material. Some sloppy storytelling doesn’t help, but any structural problems are easily forgotten thanks to Kirk’s tendency to take off as many clothes as he can as often as he can or to ham it up with demented glee when such overwrought material would probably be better served by something a bit more subdued. Inbetween outbursts there’s an intriguing mixture of conspiracy thriller, science fiction and horror as Douglas is left for dead by duplicitous partner John Cassavettes in a faked terrorist attack so he can spirit away Douglas’ son Andrew Stevens, whose psychic powers he wants to harness as a weapon. Naturally an Alpha Male like Kirk isn’t going to take this lying down and, evading Cassavettes’ killers, teams up with Amy Irving’s tormented fledgling psychic whose very touch can reopen every old wound you’ve ever had to track down the boy. But after a year of being alternately overindulged and pumped full of drugs, he’s not the all-American boy he once was…

As much a hybrid of styles as of genres, it’s a mixture of the flat and the atmospheric. There’s some sloppy storytelling and sequences shot so flatly they almost look like TV movies before the film kicks into life with a bravura setpiece like Irving’s slow motion escape from the psychic research centre that’s really a hothouse for potential human weapons or the grand guignol finale and its show-stopping epilogue.

Looks like there are a few psychic teens that can be useful as government weapons. First they need to be separated from their parents. Then a little honing and voila.

The only problem is Robin's father (Kirk Douglas) would not stay dispatched and returns with a vengeance for his son.

I read reviews ahead of time and expected a pre - "Firestarter" (1984). This movie was not disappointing; however it sort of dragged in places. On the plus side was seeing all the character actors from 1978. I did not look at the reviews close enough so nearly fell off my seat when spotting Daryl Hanna.

Any way after 30+ more years of floating and bleeding films, the explosive ending did not come as much of a surprise. I sort of expected the girl, Gillian (Amy Irving) would go back to her mother and say that school was fun, then give the camera a little wink.

Movie presented itself with true quality for a Blu-ray transfer as always Arrow Video delivers.

Don't expect hi-def wonders from this solid transfer that faithfully captures the look of this interesting follow up to "Carrie" which would have benefitted from better plot development, more visual bravura (the fairground sequence is regarded by most critics as botched) and Kirk Douglas keeping his clothes on! (That man's fascination with taking his clothes off is worrying - see the Sci-fi movie "Saturn 13" if you don't believe me.) Yes "The Fury" has some good elements and in general excellent performances, but its strange mix of comedy, action and ultimate horror, rather jars. With neither the economy of the classic "Carrie" nor the operatic spectacle of "Dressed to Kill", "Last Embrace" or "Obsession" - "The Fury" is a curate's egg - good in parts but far from totally satisfying meal.

What starts off as a very run of the mill action thriller, becomes quite an original blood thirsty horror. Kirk Douglas is in fine form, portraying humour (see the scene with grannie in the appartment), grit, emotion, and pure anger. If only the rest of the cast (inc Andrew Stevens and Carrie Snodgress) showed the same passion.

Well worth watching, very unique, and grabs your attention within the first two minutes. Might not be the best film ever made, but at 5/6 pounds, well worth buying, as it will give you 2 hours of edge of your seat thrills. Forget his son, give the true Mr Douglas a go.

Arrow's brand new Blu-ray restoration and transfer of The Fury - from the camera negative - is impeccable. The soundtrack, featuring a wonderful John Williams score, is also handsomely presented. All this wedded to a clutch of genuinely interesting and informative supplemental features means that this is simply the best home video presentation of Brian De Palma's thriller to be found anywhere in the world - fans should not hesitate to buy. Bravo Arrow...

Saw this movie for the first time only recently. I love it for its many over-complex and totally illogical plot developments, its bizarrely detailed scenes of characters eating food (the breakfast scene in the institute), and the sight of Kirk douglas in a tiny apartment dressed only in a huge pair of blue shorts.

Decent film. Cover art work and booklet are very cool indeed.
I now have 5 Arrow Video releases and plan on buying more in the near future.
Arrow Video rocks!
