Product Description

Product Description

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's timeless creation returns in a new series of handsomely designed, long out-of-print detective stories. From the earliest days of Holmes' career to his astonishing encounters with Martian invaders, the "Further Adventures" series encapsulates the most varied and thrilling cases of the world's greatest detective. In 1886, wealthy philathropist Lord Backwater is found beaten to death on the grounds of his estate. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must unravel the mystery by pitting their wits against a ruthless new enemy, taking them across the globe in search of the killer. By turns both thrilling and daring, "The Man From Hell" braves dark new territories in the Holmes mythology and is an invaluable addition to the library of any Holmes fan.

Holmes in good form 18 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I am in agreement with the previous review this is one of the better pastiches. It felt like Holmes and Watson in action which is half the battle when writing these stories. Reccomended

In many ways this back is a bit of a direct throwback to the "classic" Conan Doyle era of Holmes. The story itself is somewhat reminiscent of the Hound Of The Baskervilles (take a West Country setting, the death of a member of the aristocracy and his heir hiring Holmes to solve the mystery and the seeds are there) and Roberts makes one of the most faithful attempts to write in the Conan Doyle (or if you like Dr. John Watson) style seen in one of these books.

There's certainly precious little here that would cause the ultra-conservative Holmes reader to recoil in shock and start muttering "Holmes simply wouldn't do that."

It's by no means a perfect book; Holmes, at times, does surprisingly little, and the explanation of the back story might be necessary but does perhaps stretch out a little too long for my liking. Still this remains one of the better Holmes homages/pastiches that I have read for a while and as such certainly gets a recommendation from me.

A good yarn 30 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a great story, focusing in the past, for the solution to the mystery. Along the lines of, The Valley of Fear, The Boscombe Valley Mystery.
I do not like to give away plots and will not do so in this case. However this is one of the better books in this series. Fans of Sherlock Holmes may like this, as I did.
