5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for architecture students! 19 Jan 2012
By MRM
I bought this in the final year of my Architecture course and it revealed a lot which I had already learnt through trial and error, however if I had bought the book during my first year I would have been at a clear advantage and with more maturity to my designs. It covers almost all aspects of my course from site surveys through to structural materials, construction methods and architectural theory to advice on portfolios and modelmaking and much more.

The design of the book itself and the chapters are well laid out with bold and clear graphics, lots of images and colour coded sections for easy referencing - everything about the book shows that the author has spent time and effort thinking about how people will approach and read the book. To a beginner in architecture it is an eye-opener and also useful for the more experienced architect. Another book I would definitely recommend is "101 things I learnt in Architecture School". These books will prove invaluable to anyone starting out in Architecture and mostly all you need.

This is an excellent introduction to architecture, covering both the historical and theoretical underpinning of the subject as well as the technical aspects of practicing architecture.

The first couple of chapters provide an initial introduction to architecture, including an interesting section focussing on the development from `The Ancient World' through to `Modernism'. Other examples of topics included are materials, construction and sustainability.

The final chapter, `Realisation' is a particularly useful guide to the various stages of the professional design process including helpful explanations of the roles of surveyors, engineers and contractors in relation to the Architect.

The book is also really well designed and the text is supported by images and diagrams of projects throughout. This would be a perfect book for anyone interested in or already studying architecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Overview 28 July 2012
By Samuel - Published on Amazon.com
This book is by far the best for anyone interested in Architecture. This cook covers every aspect of this subject, both historical and theoretical in every process in the application of Architecture.
The book starts right at the beginning of Architecture by providing a brief introduction but also including a timeline of Architecture to help you place it in the modern era. I was surprised to see the chapter `Construction' as I thought this book was only theory. This chapter was good at helping describe materials that can be used and to bring the book into a more practical sense.
Each and every chapter is important into making this book a good read, but I feel the last chapter ` Realisation' has got to be the most important. This is because it brings the theory of designing Architecture into the practical application in the world.
This book is very well written and each page is accompanied with relevant images/drawings/pictures to help explain each feature. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in architecture or currently studying Architecture.
