Product Description

The lost art of thrift is rediscovered in this cookbook through a wealth of fantastic recipes, from budget breakfasts--Spring Vegetable Frittata or French Toast with Polish Cherries--to easy midweek suppers, such as Thai Beef Salad or Linguine with Stilton and Onion. In a time where about a third of all the food purchased is thrown out, this book is ideal for anyone who is eager to cut out waste and make the most of everything they buy. With a full glossary of ingredients and ideas for how to use them up, as well as a myriad of thrifty tips that promise to transform even the most sorry leftover into an inventive and tasty meal, this is a kitchen manual that no home can afford to be without.

Fantastic book! 2 Nov 2008
By Gal
Format:Paperback
This book has come at the right time, when food prices have risen but we all want to eat good food. There are lots of lovely recipes using pulses such as creamy lentils with cream, hummus, chickpea bake. Ideas for using the leftovers from a roast such as soups and curry (I made this yesterday and it was gorgeous) and an extremely good list at the back which each food and what can be done with it, which has given me lots of ideas to use that odd carrot or bit of cheese lurking in the fridge. I have all of Fiona's books but I think this will be the most used. Brilliant!

I'm s bit surprised at the negative reviews. I liked this book a lot. I enjoyed the section at the beginning with ideas for making food stretch (utilize your freezer, look for deals-but is it really a deal?) although the section was a little long and quite a lot of common sense. And i liked the section at the end with ingredient by ingredient leftover ideas. I havent made many of the recipes as they are not that appealing. but i like the way it is written. i aggree with fionas decision to leave out recipes using offal and cheap meat as i have no interest in eating them no matter how frugal they are and i assume a lot of people would agree with me.

Quite suprised by how "low" this has been rated. I like this cookery book. It would be a nice addition to your collection for those days where you don't have all the ingredients for specific recipes and just want to find a meal based on one main ingredient e.g a chicken leg, leftover mince or a can of sardines. Taste is not forfeited due to low cost ingeredients and many are easy to prepare. The book has many sections with my favourite being the last section "A-Z of leftovers". Pick an ingredient from a vast list e.g egg, pasta, bananas and you will find other foods which will match well with it. This has, on many occasions, saved me the time needed to think up good combos for leftovers. Overall I really like this cookery book and the frugality is at the right level for me. I'm sure this would work as your main cookery book although I would suggest owning/using others such as maybe using your favourite cookery book for one day and then for the next day use this book to finish off any leftover ingredients you may have "created" from last night. This book would work for most people although if cooking for one person, student cook books or "cooking for one" books would probably be more suitable as most of these recipes are designed for 2-4 people. =)
