Product Description

Review

A graceful retelling of the Russian folk tale with lust illustrations set in the time of the Tsars. (Carousel )

Fascinatingly fresh conformation of familiar themes in language which is straightforward and compelling. The clear and highly readable text is entirely embedded in Virginia Lee's richly detailed and eventful visual realm. (Books for Keeps )

The gorgeous Arabian Nights-style pictures glow mysteriously as we follow the prince on his desperate mission to find and win his princess. There are lots of potential talking points in the pictures which could inspire some exciting art work. (Child Education )

Virginia Lee has illustrated the book with beautiful evocative pictures that capture the mythical nature of the story. (School Librarian )

Product Description

A Russian tsar tells each of his three sons to shoot an arrow and marry the woman he finds where the arrow lands. Imagine the feelings of the youngest son when he discovers a large frog holding his arrow in her mouth. He marries the frog, only to discover that each night she changes into a beautiful princess. But will he ever have a flesh-and-blood human wife to call his own…? Virginia Lee's haunting, other-worldly illustrations transform Antonia Barber's elegant retelling of a Russian folk tale into an enchanting fairytale classic.

Soon to be a classic 17 Jun 2008

The first book from this wonderfully skilled illustrator Virginia Lee is a delight from cover to cover. Superb draughtsmanship and a deep understanding of the fairytale genre make this a piece that will remain a favourite on one's bookshelf from child to adulthood. I await her next picture book with much excitement!

A Treasure! 20 Oct 2007
By JK
Format:Hardcover
This story is beautifully told and illustrated. I predict that Virginia Lee will join the ranks of the most outstanding modern folk and fairytale illustrators, such as K Y Craft and Gennady Spirin. What an amazing first book!
