From Amazon.co.uk

Andrew Bergman’s tongue-in-cheek comedy The Freshman keeps the spoofing low key, underplaying the outrageous situations even as he piles them higher. Young Clark Kellog (Matthew Broderick) had no idea film school would drop him into the hands of a real-life Godfather, but after a street punk robs him during his first day in New York City, that’s just where the road leads. Marlon Brando lets everyone know he’s in on the joke with his hammy, good-humoured performance as the bulldog-jowled Mafioso Carmine Sabatini, the man Clark’s prissy, self-important professor swears was the real-life inspiration for Don Corleone. Carmine has a modest proposal for the naive kid from Vermont involving Carmine’s gorgeous daughter Tina (Penelope Ann Miller) and the illegal importing of an endangered lizard. And if the sight of a six-foot-long lizard scattering shoppers as it runs wild through a New York City mall doesn’t do it for you, there’s always Bert Parks’ rousing rendition of Bob Dylan’s "Maggie’s Farm".--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

Product Description

Upon arrival in New York, Vermont freshman Clark Kellogg (Matthew Broderick) is robbed by conman Victor Ray (Bruno Kirby). When Clark tracks Ray down, he offers to find him a 'legitimate' job with his 'importer/exporter' uncle: Mafia Don Carmine Sabatini (Marlon Brando, parodying his famous 'Godfather' role). Inducted into Sabatini's world, Clark begins to realise that he is aiding and abetting an illegal gourmet society which smuggles in endangered species for its members' dining pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars More intricate than you think 13 July 2005
By bernie VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
First some info about the DVD. It has an appalling lack of extra goodies. At first you think they forgot to label the DVD. Then you can see from the description ring that one side is for full screen format and the other side is for windscreen format.

This movie is fun from the beginning. Clark Kellogg (Matthew Broderick) narrates the background story. And is the focus of the movie. Clark is going to New York to film school. Upon arrival he loses his luggage in 19 minutes and 11 seconds. I will not go through the detail, as it is more fun to be surprised. However etch scene is so funny that you forget the different layers and depth of the story.

The music alone would be worth the movie: "From Here to Eternity", "I Wanna Be Around", "Mona Lisa", "New York, New York", "Shuffle Off To Buffalo", "String Quartet No. 13 in a Minor", "There She is, Miss America", "Guantanamera", "Heart and Soul", "Introit: Viri Galilaei", "Maggie's Farm", "Parlami D'Amore Mariu", "Straight Outta Compton", "Tequila"

There are a few highlights for just about everyone. The first time camera zeros in on Jimmy "The Toucan". The object being transported has a misadventure (great elevator scene.) The obligatory car chase with the unique outcome. The "beautiful Tina" Penelope Ann Miller, is so beautiful that it takes some time to just accept her character. Finally Bert Parks should produce his own album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inventive, funny Hollywood comedy 5 April 2012
By K. Gordon TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
It's rare that a Hollywood comedy is truly original, but this one manages
for the great majority of the time.

Terrific supporting performances throughout (especially by Paul
Benedict, and the complexly off-the-wall Maximllian Schell), and
Brando is brilliant enough that he can somehow pull off a simultaneous
outrageous self-parody, while still getting us to take the character
seriously enough to follow the story and even like the guy.

And Matthew Broderick, always solid, deserves kudos for not getting
blown off the screen by Brando's much bigger than life charisma.

This is full of odd and inventive moments, and while the ending is a bit
pat, for most of it's length it's joyfully completely unpredictable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Brando in crisis, a very poor film.. 16 May 2011
By Abu C
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I ordered this having seen Brando's performance in the Godfather and wanting to see him reprise that role, albeit with a comic twist.

But this is a real disappointment, an exceptionally bad movie. There are a few funny moments (the film lecturer is quite funny), but on the whole it's derivative, bland and uninspiring. If you like your comedies funny and entertaining, avoid this...
