As is the case with most North Americans, I have only a passing knowledge Balkan history and current affairs. Even at the height of the civil strife of the 1990's, the region tended only to come to my awareness for brief moments during newscasts and then would quickly pass from my mind. Accordingly, I bought this book, not only because I generally enjoy Simon Winchester's writing, but because I wanted to learn a little more about this troubled corner of the world.
Unfortunately, although I did get a little insight into the roots of the ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia, I can't say that this book was a very good introduction to the subject. The focus of the book is Winchester's travels through the region in 1999. Some of what he saw and experienced was interesting but the picture he paints of the various countries is now very out-of-date. He intersperses his descriptions of the places he visits with some general history but the result is quite disjointed for anybody trying to understand what took place there and why. I am not sorry I bought the book by any means but Winchester has done far better with other subjects.
