This ITC crime drama series, loosely based on Edgar Wallace's novel of 1905, assembles an astonishing array of talent: Jack Hawkins (The Cruel Sea), Richard Conte (The Godfather) and Oscar nominees Vittorio de Sica and Dan Dailey star as the four men chosen to pursue justice and defeat tyranny worldwide; their regular co-stars include Avengers heroine Honor Blackman, as glamorous secretary Nicole, Lisa Gastoni, June Thorburn, and Andrew Keir (Quatermass and the Pit).
The series' cosmopolitan flavour and stylish settings paved the way for many later series that combined crime-fighting adventure with the glamour of exotic locations and a touch of romance. The Four Just Men garnered rave reviews from critics and proved a major success for ITC, and is notable for a unique format in which each of the protagonists and their co-stars appeared in turn, in separate episodes and storylines. Judi Dench, Mai Zetterling, Alan Bates, Jane Asher and Patrick Troughton are among the guests making early television appearances in this classic series, first screened in 1959 and 1960, and now available for the first time on DVD.
Four men who last met in battle during the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943 are summoned to Foxgrove Manor, to hear a message recorded by their wartime commanding officer, Colonel Bacon, shortly before his death. He appeals to them to form a quartet dedicated to fighting injustice and the abuse of power, and has bequeathed a large sum of money for that purpose. London MP and amateur sleuth Ben Manfred, American reporter Tim Collier, New York lawyer Jeff Ryder and Italian hotelier Ricco Poccari agree to carry out the Colonel's dying wish, and their epic mission takes the Four Just Men across Europe and beyond.

'The Four Just Men' is one more excellent crime series from ITC, pre-dating 'The Saint' by a couple of years and based on a book by Edgar Wallace. It concerns four WW2 comrades who are called together some years later by their then dying ex-commander whose wish is that they form an alliance to combat injustice in the world. They agree, of course.
Dan Dailey plays American reporter Tim Collier, Jack Hawkins plays London MP Ben Manfred, Richard Conte plays New York lawyer Jeff Ryder and Vittorio De Sica plays Italian hotelier Ricco Poccari. Each episode features one of the four, although the others sometimes make brief appearances. The series is typical of all the later ITC series, albeit that the episodes are only 25 minutes long, and the supporting actors are all very familiar faces. Honor Blackman, Andrew Keir, June Thorburn and Lisa Gastoni are also regulars in the series.
The first episode appears to be in need of some restoration, but the rest are excellent quality. Full marks to Network for resurrecting yet another great series from the past

Broadcast from 1959 to 1960, the four men of the title previously fought in WW11 together, summoned by their commanding officer just before he dies, they agree to join together to fight crime and injustice, with the help of substantial funds left to them.
The four main stars, Jack Hawkins, Dan Dailey, Vittoria De Sica, and Richard Conte, alternate through each episode, which is set in various locations around the world, this gives the series a nice cosmopolitan feel, various stars of the era also make guest appearances.
Although I found some episodes better than others, I couldn't find a weak episode here. To sum up, I found this to be an excellent early ITC TV series, with great performances from the four leads and guest stars, with high production values and excellent scripts, each 25 minute, black and white episode is nicely paced.
This 39 episode complete series features excellent picture and sound quality (except the first episode) with no subtitles.
The special features are an episodic picture gallery, and Press and PR.
The five discs are neatly stored in a single-size dvd case, so it's nice and compact.
If you like other ITC television series, I'm confident you will like this.

Nice productions, good stories. Cast is excellent, with many favorites in guest roles. I was not familiar with the series before hand but I am familiar with the Edgar Wallace stories. So I was a little disappointed that the four stars don't interact throughout the series. Example; One episode is a Dan Dailey episode, the next is a Jack Hawkin's episode. The four just men do not work together to fight injustice, they fight individually, turning the series into standard fare for me. Don't get me wrong, I think the quality is there, I was just hoping the series would better emulate the Wallace stories.

Very pootr the discs were not as good as expected and the stories were too short too many breaks in the series
