This comedy satire was directed by Billy Wilder, from a script he wrote with I.A.L. Diamond, and saw the first screen pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Lemmon plays Harry Hinkle, a news cameraman who is knocked over while covering a football game and subsequently rushed to hospital. Matthau plays Whiplash Willie, Hinkle's brother-in-law, an unscrupulous lawyer who knows an opportunity when he sees one and tries to persuade Hinkle to fake injury and sue for a million dollars. Hinkle agrees, but will he be able to keep up the pretence? Matthau collected a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance.

A football player Luther 'Boom Boom' Jackson (Ron Rich) accidentally knocks down Harry Hinkle (Jack Lemmon) a television camera operator. Learning of Harry's childhood injury brother-in-law Willie Gingrich (Walter Matthau) a lawyer sees an opportunity and seizes that opportunity. Willie with the assistance of Hinkle's ex-wife Sandy Hinkle (Judi West) railroads him into faking an injury.

Will Harry succumb to their will?
Will Luther 'Boom Boom' Jackson ever play again?
Will Willie and Sandy realize the fruits of their efforts?

This movie is not so much of a comedy as it is an interaction between people and ideals. We as observers are taken along for the ride. However, you may find yourselves kibitzing occasionally.

The movie is worth watching at least once. Everyone does a fine job of acting. You will feel like you are back in 1966 and waiting for the big game. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent film, happily first viewed by myself courtesy of the good old BBC in the 70's, way back when they still showed decent films at Christmas (The Apartment etc) and every bit as enjoyable when watched again this weekend, & heaven knows on how many other occasions over the years!!.
I originally purchased this on the sadly dying Laserdisc format, but migrated when released on DVD for the convenience of not having to wrestle with 2 old disks and four sides. Think MGM have used the very same print for this issue as the minor imperfections in an otherwise superb image appear identical. Just go and buy it and immerse yourself in the fun, not sure why anyone would find the characters annoying, or feel that the film does not really go anywhere. The story finally returns full circle after closure of the failed scam to reveal both of the unwitting participants acting out the introduction, on the same playing field, this time with a small audience of somewhat bemused janitors and not thousands excited sports fans! GREAT STUFF!

Pictures like this aren't made any more, more's the pity. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon are nothing short of brilliant. Get this movie for a breath of fresh air and plenty of laughs over the Christmas period.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best three together 18 Sep 2012

Very funny. Wilder, Nathau and Lemmon, what a chemistry! I don't think anybody will ever repeat. Lawyers had of course to be witty, but this one (Nathau) exceeds them all. I recommend.
