Book Description

Britain's Prince William of Gloucester was born during the darkest days of the Second World War and died ten years before his cousin, today's well-known Prince William, was born. A young page in Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s wedding, in thirty short years William became the House of Windsor's first modern prince but has been largely forgotten. He tested the limits of royal convention in work and love by pursuing a career in business and diplomacy and dating women who could never be accepted as a royal bride. William also lived an adventurous life, escaping several near death experiences during travels around the world, witnessing one of the most tragic periods in American history, and becoming a competitive pilot before his life was cut short in a tragic accident.

Based on personal accounts by the family and friends who knew William best, extracts from his own reflections on his life and family, and photographs at different stages of his life, this book provides a unique glimpse into a prince’s coming of age and what growing up in the British royal family is really like.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed 22 Dec. 2013

This book was an easy read but had very little details of the life of Prince Willam of Gloucester. He had a short life but l did not feel l got to know him or how he ticked as the detail was scant. Worth a quick read but generally disappointingly

2.0 out of 5 stars Too short and full of howlers... 30 Nov. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I can't say this was worth buying. It is far too short. I think I could learn as much on a well-known internet encyclopedia, and it wouldn't be so full of howlers, which made the precision of noting where certain towns are in Britain, especially the old chestnut of how many miles they are from London, rather over the top. The author has evidently read a number of books. The notes and bibliography count for nearly 30% of this tome! So why so many basic mistakes which took either a cursory look at the said online encyclopedia or just the drop of my jaw to realise. Prince William's long-term girl friend, Zsuzsi Starkloff, is described as Roman Catholic. She is, in fact, Jewish. Prince Henry and Princess Alice dud not wear the coronets of their title, a duke and duchess to King George VI's Coronation, they wore those of their rank as Prince and Princess of the United Kingdom! The worst mistake is stating that King George VI died on 7th February 1952. He in fact died, as any writer on the British Royal Family (and their readers) should know, on the 6th February1952! Remind me not to buy Parker Healy's work again...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended 24 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was the most badly researched and dreadfully written book I have ever read. The author clearly didn't really know what sort of book he was intending to write. The structure was absolutely appalling. I am surprised his editors let him get away with it, let alone have it published. Very disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 16 Mar. 2014

Poorly written and extremely brief. More like an obituary than a biography. Nothing new about this prince who died so young.

This turned out to be a valiant attempt to make a fairly run of the mill life interesting, and I am afraid failing.
