Product Description

Captain Perrin Shin, assigned to village Edge of the World, is out to do more than command the new fort. He’s determined to uncover the mystery of the Guarders: where they live, why they attack, and what they want.
Suspiciously, none of their behavior has ever made sense.
Mahrree Peto, a teacher in Edge, is also growing suspicious. Of the Administrators who promise to eradicate the Guarders, and of the arrogant captain they sent to protect Edge.
It’s hard to know who to trust.
The most powerful man in the world is also fascinated by trust, and precisely what it takes to destroy it. He’s looking for research subjects, and up in Edge a brash captain and a nosy teacher have caught his attention.
Let the experiment begin.
Part fantasy, part adventure, part humor, part romance, part mystery all equates to a wholly entertaining and unique family saga.
Forest at the Edge Series--you've never read anything like this before.
Think you know who to trust?
Think you know the color of the sky?
Probably not . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing! 16 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author has come up with an interesting setting. A world that isn't progressing and a bit fed up with the ruling class. But come the revolution does it necessarily bring change? At first I found the pace slow, however this was a good thing as the reader learns about the central characters and the many plots are weaved. Intrigue abounds as the reader ponders who are the actual good guys? Very well written, the suspense builds and the characters are very interesting. Bring on the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing 1 July 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I hope I'm not giving anything away, but it was refreshing to read a fantasy-type book that was not centered on elves, vampires, magicians, etc. While you may see themes that remind you of Tolkien, Eddings, Martin, or Rowling; it does not feel like a copycat novel of anything you may have read.

There are well thought-out characters and a realistic world that is not hard to imagine as plausible. Characters are not shallow stereotypes or caricatures, but seem to have valid reasons and motives for their actions. This probably explains the length of the book. It takes time to build a detailed environment and detailed characters, but it is worth it.

I got an advanced copy of this book, but I have purchased it again, partially because I believe the author deserves some compensation (although I feel guilty for the small price tag), but also so I can make sure that I have the "official" version, as I am sure there will be additional books coming my way in the future. I will look forward to each one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh story adults and teens will love 1 July 2013
By Liz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
A dystopian romantic novel with the perfect amount of suspense, this novel is the start of what will be a long writing career for Mercer.

Readers will be caught up in the public courtship of two people who, along with those closest to them, had given up on the idea of romance. They will be captivated by the world of Edge and the mysterious forests at its borders. As they delve deeper into this novel readers will find themselves wondering how far a mad man will go in his crazy, world-wide experiment.

Maharee's natural curiosity leads her to wonder if the secure world she lives in really is as safe as she, and those around her, assumed. She and Perrin try desperately to make sense of the escalating violence surrounding them and eventually come to the same conclusion: the world really is out to get them. Now all they have to do is figure out who is behind the world.

Don't let its length deter you from trying this new book. Not too long ago 'Harry Potter's page count was deemed too long to hold children's attention. This novel will hold adults' interest and is clean enough to lend to their teens.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth some patience 12 Feb 2014
By J. Gunnar Grey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a deep, haunting inspirational fantasy novel, well, somewhere between inspirational fantasy and sweet romance, with dystopian elements thrown in.

A small town teacher, Mahrree Peto, is challenged to publicly debate the new fort's commander, Captain Perrin Shin. As they verbally wrangle on the village green's stage, they find a) they like each other and b) they like arguing with each other. But there are dangers in this world, where strange people called Guarders attack villages from the forest, killing and stealing, where it almost seems as if the Guarders know individuals within the village and single them out as targets. What's going on and what's it going to take for the captain to protect his growing family?

Some solid writing underlies the story, although a bit of trimming and another proofreading pass wouldn't hurt the text. The characters not only are well constructed, they have that extra something that personality provides. The combination carries the story through the slower parts (where trimming could help it along), making it rather hard to notice the story's slowed until you think on it later.

All in all, it's a good story for patient readers. Let's call it four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new book! 5 July 2013
By MomofThree - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I tend to read exclusively science fiction/fantasy books so I was excited to read this one and I wasn't disappointed! The world is believable and the characters are well thought out and developed. It was easy to lose myself in this world and forget about my own for a while.

But the best part was the plot! It's not the standard "hero's journey", although there are some elements of that, there are also elements of mystery and suspense and I absolutely loved the moral and philosophical struggles that the characters experience. I can't wait to read the next one!
