Product Description

Review

'...remains an unsettling collection of stories and fragments that record the experiences of a Chicago-born millionaire s daughter who became an unlikely nurse in WWI France.' --Open Letters Monthly

'...a slim but very moving volume...It was Mary Borden s supreme achievement not only to save as many men as she did and nurse the others gently to the end but to put down on paper some of what it felt like to be there, living and dying in the mud.' --Booktrust website

'...a flawless gem of a book, a beautifully written account of horrific tragedy.' --dovegreyreader

Product Description

May Borden worked for four years in an evacuation hospital unit following the front lines up and down the European theatre of the First World War; this beautifully written book is a collection of her memories and impressions of that experience. Describing the men as they march into battle, engaging imaginatively with the stories of individual soldiers, and recounting procedures at the field hospital, the author offers a perspective on the war that is both powerful and intimate.

Great book 24 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
Mary Borden's book is fascinating - I'm surprised its the first time its been republished since 1929. Its tells a really harrowing story of her WW1 experience running an ambulence service right on the front line. Unlike so many war memoirs its marvellously short (less than 200 pages). Its also fantastically well written. Mary Borden became a well known novelist between the wars and this book is very readable. I'm intending to give it to all my female realtions for Christmas.

The Forbidden Zone 21 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This is an incredible book which I read for my AS English Literature. It depicts the horrors of nursing in World War One and the devastating effect this war had on Borden, the soldiers and the countryside. It is shocking and heart-wrenching, but written with great sensitivity and perception. Well worth a look for wider reading in AS English or if you are interested in this subject.

Mistaken choice 8 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
This was purchased as one of 6 new books relating to the First World War but unfortunately "on screen" gave no real indicaton that "a nurse's impressions" of the fighting would contain a great many "stories" as opposed to actual written descriptions of her nursing experiences. I realise that "impressions" gives the opportunity for deviation from actuality but these were of the "the summer world was deep, immense, beautiful" type of prose. "The bright sun shining on his massive unconscious bulk made the darkness of his lost consciousness visible"- being another.

I am not deliberately seeking the blood and gore of WW1, that is there anyway, but something more relevant and actual. A disappointment but perfect for readers wishing to experience the war through long wordy pieces.
