Book Description

THE WOW FACTOR is a nationwide competition set up by Faber Children's Books and Waterstones to find a new children's author, someone whose work has that magical ingredient that will feed the imagination of the country's children. The competition drew thousands of entries and the judging panel included Fern Britton and Philip Schofield from ITV's This Morning program and children's authors Anna Dale and G. P. Taylor.

Product Description

They know. I'm sure of it.

And I'm really scared.

Who knows what they're capable of?

I've got to get away.

I've got to escape.

It takes just one tragic moment for Jenny's life to change forever. Taken to live at Oak Hall Children's Centre, Jenny begins a very different life, confined to a wheelchair and dreaming of an earlier time filled with love, family and friends.

Then Helen and John Holland offer her a foster home with their adorable 5-year-old son, Stephen. The model of a perfect family, Jenny dares to hope that she will at last find some happiness.

But when she discovers an old diary beneath a floorboard in her new bedroom, she begins to unravel a horrifying secret. A secret that lies within the padlocked cellar under the house. A secret with mind-blowing consequences. And suddenly Jenny's perfect new life has turned into a deadly nightmare - in which right and wrong no longer exist . . .

An intense, frightening and thought-provoking thriller from an exceptional new talent.

I read this novel two months ago when i found it in the new book section in my school's library. As an English teacher, I really found the opening chapters perfect to demonstrate to my second form class the importance of capturing the audience's intial interest.

This novel is a thrilling roller coaster of emotion, lulling it's teenage audience into a false sense of security before beginning to reveal the cracks in the 'perfect' family that have adopted the protagonist, Jenny. The novel explores the ethical dilemmas surrounding stem cell research and yet does so in a way that engages and educates teenagers.

This novel is an enjoyable read for both adults and children alike!

Great storytelling! 10 Mar 2007
By Hugo
Format:Paperback
This novel may be primarily aimed at the older children/teens age group, but it's basically a great story that should appeal to older kids and adults. It's a mystery/thriller that slowly but surely cranks up the tension until you can't put it down. The main characters are well drawn, and the plot is clever enough to keep you guessing right up to the thrilling dénouement. It's not hard to see why this won the "Wow Factor" award - hopefully there will be more to come from Sarah Wray. This one gets five stars from both me and my thirteen year old.
