Terry Callier was an American jazz, soul and folk guitarist, singer and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. A childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield, Callier began recording in 1963 but never reached stardom despite a series of regional hits in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1983, he decided to retire from music due to personal reasons. He re-emerged from obscurity when British DJs discovered his ... Read more in Amazon's Terry Callier Store

There are now TWO CD issues of this album which requires some explanation...

The first was released in 1995 in the UK on one of Ace Records label imprints - Beat Goes Public CDBGPM 101. It was a straightforward reissue of the US vinyl album on Prestige PR 7383. It ran to 37:46 minutes and had no mastering or remastering credits. The sound quality was ok, but it has been made redundant by...

This 2nd issue - an upgraded 2003 remaster that adds three previously unreleased outtakes from the original session to the album's eight tracks (55:01 minutes).

This new version on Beat Goes Public CDBGPM 156 has been transferred by JOE TARANTINO at the Fantasy Studios in California - and if I was to describe what's better - it's the vocals - they're far more amplified and to beautiful effect. Unfortunately, it's still a gatefold slip of paper that provides no history of the record (the original May 1965 liner notes are reproduced, but it's the usual vague Sixties babble that doesn't actually inform you of anything).

Aged only 23, "New Folk Sound Of..." was recorded by Samuel Charters in the Webb Recording Studios in Chicago in just one day - 29 July 1964 - and released in the late summer of the following year. There are only 3 musicians - TERRY CALLIER on Guitar and Vocals, TERBOUR ATTENBOROUGH on Bass and JOHN TWEEDLE also on Bass. Another surprise is that all the songs are covers - five being Public Domain Traditionals while the other three were from songwriter catalogues of the time.

Side 1 opens with the lovely and lonesome "900 Miles" which sets up his style and the album's overall feel. Although it's just him on Acoustic Guitar with his voice high up in the mix and the other instruments behind him, the effect is more FOLK-SOUL than just Folk or Roots.

5.0 out of 5 stars MESMERISING! 28 April 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The first album I bought of Terry Callier was "Colour Of Love".

A classic album that I had only discovered recently. I thought I must check out some more.

Where better to start than the beginning. This is basically acoustic guitar and Terrys enchanting vocals. The second and third tracks are very deceptive, almost off putting nowadays by their title alone. Even so they are done with class.

Once you get past them the album truly comes into its own.

Calliers vocals demand you to listen and the guitar work compliments his songs beautifuly.

This is a great record. Jeff Buckley fans will reconize the vocal styling on some of these songs. I am sure he must have been a fan of this guy!

Add it to your collection, you will be very glad you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life's Full of Surprises 1 July 2009
By Xdealer

I came to this album in rather a strange way. As a lifelong fan of psychedelia I had often wondered who the Collier was on HP Lovecraft 2, credited with writing Spin,Spin,Spin and It's About Time. Imagine my surprise when I bought this and discovered that the credit should have read Callier and that his original versions are on this album. He does a solid cover of I'm a Drifter which also found it's way into the HP Lovecraft setlist so I suspect that since they were both Chicago based artists it came via him rather than the composer. This is such a strong debut that even the inclusion of his versions of done to death Cotton Eyed Joe and just plain naff Oh Dear(what can the matter be) can only remove one star from an otherwise perfect score.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated and powerful 28 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is quite hypnotic, exiting, emotional...
Folk music may not be the first genre I think of when I reach for my CD collection (although I have some Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie), but this magnificent musician really delivers a very pleasurable CD. More urbane and sophisticated than many folk artists, Callier still sounds direct, like a blow in the head (but in a good way).
Excellent guitar work supplements magnificent, clear and strong vocals.

Recommended to music fans across the scale of different musical tastes.
