Wheat, not chaff 12 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
For once there's a top class folk compilation with superb performances, great songs and a thoughtful selection...there's no "Streets of London" or old out of copyright clunkers here, just 100% enjoyment!

There's any number of highlights but pride of place probably goes to Eliza Carthy's stunning performance of "Fisher Boy" - there should be a copy of this rendition in every home, it's that good. There's a splendid variety of music and styles here, which complement each other splendidly - the compilers deserve genuine praise for putting together a really fine collection.

This is a fantastic CD featuring some of the Topic record label's brightest stars (Waterson:Carthy, June Tabor, Eliza Carthy). The Folk Collection is a must-buy for anyone who is new to the folk scene as the two CDs feature a wonderful selection of songs and artists. This CD set is fantastically good value and I thoroughly recommend it (I must warn you that you WILL end up buying many more Topic CDs after hearing this!)

Definitive 6 Aug 2010
Format:MP3 Download
If your looking for a good 'folk' compilation then this is it. Containing a mixture of traditional English, Scottish folk, some of the diffent variations (such as Pentangles folk/jazz fusion) as well as a sprinkling of American folk/blues. It so varied that it never gets boring.

It also doesn't fall into the same trap of other compilations of including some artists who happen to have strummed an acoustic guitar during the first verse of their current single and therefore can call themselves 'Folk'.

Hats off to the compiler - whoever it was seemed to know what they were doing.
