Create custom sound effects that are the mainstay of soundtracks for films, broadcast, animation and games. Learn how Foley is designed, crafted and edited for any project- right down to the nuts and bolts of spotting, cueing, and performing sounds. An array of techniques is illustrated with artists presenting their own methods for selecting and handling props, "walking" various characters, and other tricks of the trade. Various renowned artists, editors and mixers contribute stories and perspectives on what is necessary for a film or media project, and how technology has changed the craft over the years. The Foley stage is discussed in detail, with illustrations to assist you in designing your own stage, whatever the size. The companion DVD includes video demonstrations of Foley Artists at work, along with illustrated techniques for the novice.

Product Description

Review

"Ament's book is valuable in putting the spotlight on this aspect of sound postproduction, in establishing a 'classical' baseline against which the variations of animation and game Foley performance can be judged, and, occasionally, in its suggestions as to what these variations may be.  Rather than revolving around the less specific notion of 'sound design', future crucial reflection on animation and game sounds can only benefit by feeding in the kind of specialist practical knowledge Ament provides about the aural footprint left by a very particular aspect of the sound production process."--Animation: An Interdisciplinary Journal

2.0 out of 5 stars pardon? 4 May 2009
Format:Paperback
While some nice reviews prompted me to buy this book, I got little from it in terms of technique, background or motivation. Reading more like a (rather dull) memoire than an educational textbook, I will be selling my copy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Foley Grail 12 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
The book arrived quickly and in excellent condition.
The book is interesting enough but I had hoped for a few more actual ideas for creating sounds rather than reminiscing about ones colleagues in the business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well I liked it! 22 Feb 2010
By jahtao
Format:Paperback
Had absolutely no trouble with pages falling out, and I really abused the book on my daily commute - I had to sort of roll it up in order to get it into my rather small jacket pocket and then really force it to get it out. Never had any trouble with books by this publisher too.

Liked the book a lot, I've not given it 5 stars because it didn't capture my imagination and blow my mind like Yewdall's sound for motion pictures text book which was just so full of character and I'm feeling a little tight on the stars today.

Wished I had read it before I had started my foley for this mate's 50min film i'm doing at the moment (usually work mixing tele and don't do much foley normally) as the ideas on cueing up the cues would have been most helpful!
