The Flying Man 6 Feb 2012
By Debs VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is one of those strange books where you know you shouldn't like the protagonist and yet you do. Mike (just one of his many names) is in no way an admirable character - he walks out on multiple marriages and his children, he makes his living by conning people, he seems to have very little compunction or remorse about his behaviour right up till the very end, and yet something about him makes him almost likeable. Perhaps it is partly because the story is written from his point of view; perhaps this makes us more sympathetic towards him. Or perhaps it is the way he lives his life without concern for consequences and does exactly what he wants - perhaps this is something that every one of us wants to have to some small degree. Whatever the reason, his tale is certainly an engaging one. It takes us through a variety of different countries and different relationships as we follow Mike on his various travels.

It is a slow starter but it soon warms up into an engaging story; it begins when Mike is an old man, alone in a cheap hotel room thinking over his life, and most of the rest of the story constitutes a flashback in which his story is told. It took me a while to get into it and at first I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it, but once the story of Mike began to evolve I found myself thoroughly engrossed in it. The writing style is descriptive, the characters are credible and the story is entertaining. I particularly liked the way Mike's children both reacted differently towards their father as they seemed very believable in their individuality, both wanting to be loved by their father and at the same time angry with him, and both coming to a sort of acceptance in their own time and way.

a slow starter - from the start the reader can clearly see that the children have been bought up on lies. The book reveals these lies and sees how the family cope after the lies are corrected.
I did enjoy the book, however it is not one that i would readily promote to others to read.

I've always been a fan of Roopa Farooki's multicultural fiction, and her latest is probably her best book yet - The Flying Man is beautifully written, suprisingly funny, deeply sad, and a rollicking good read. We follow Farooki's adventurous anti-hero on his journey through life and around the world, as he tries on and sheds new identities like costumes, and cheerfully abandons careers, friends, wives and children, never quite finding who he's meant to be, or where he might belong. The book stayed with me long after I had finished it.Farooki has always been a critical success, but I think that this book, most of all, deserves a large audience.
