THE FLY TRAP is, in ways, an unusual book. The author, Fredrik Sjoberg is a collector of hoverflies, so the book is part reflection of hoverflies and nature. But, it is more than that. Sjoberg also ponders about collecting and collectors - what drives them to collect their selected treasure? He also spends time discussing the career and life of Rene Malaise, a naturalist that, I have to admit, I had not heard of before.
I truly enjoyed THE FLY TRAP. Sjoberg has a great talent for words - at times, his prose was quite poetic. The section where he describes going outside during the summer nights, is quite beautiful. The overall result of this short book is a relaxing meander with the author, seeing the world from his eyes and, perhaps, making you consider the world around you a little more.

Beautifully written book that meanders gently towards nowhere in particular, ruminating about the lives of various entomologists and indeed life in general. A joy right until the end which I found slightly odd and unsatisfactory - otherwise it would be an absolute five star choice. Certainly one to read again as it is utterly charming, and to be read in hardback as the format goes perfectly with the old-fashioned nature of the tale. I'm going to look much more closely next time I see a hoverfly.

...and whoever translated it - I wonder how much of the old fashioned phraseology is the authors and how much the writer? I digress..... this is a book about flies and islands, people and traps, a man and his net. It's lyrical in its flow and meander, weave and weft. I'm left thinking of summer afternoons by rivers under trees.

Disappointing read. Maybe interesting if one has an inordinate liking of hover flies or enjoys extremely detailed descriptions of everyday actions and thoughts. But that wasn't me!

An Utterly Fascinating Book 10 Dec. 2014

An utterly fascinating book, written in a quirky style, that uses a study of nature as a springboard for thoughts and observations about life in general. A literal reader might be nonplussed by the surface topic (hoverflies), but this is not a book for a literal reader. Fredrik Sjöberg is a rare writer, and one I would love to meet one day...
