More About the Author

In 1958 Be Your Own Gardening Expert started a major innovation in gardening books. In 2008 the Expert guides celebrated their 50th anniversary and the 50 millionth copy in print. They had become the bestselling gardening books in history.

Their creator Dr D G (Dave) Hessayon, the son of a Cypriot landowner, was born in 1928 and grew up in Manchester. He read Botany at Leeds University, where he gained his BSc degree. In 1950 he travelled to the United States, working as the editor of a small town newspaper. In 1953 he went to Ghana as a Research Fellow at the University College before returning to Manchester to obtain his PhD in soil ecology. In 1955 he accepted a position as chief scientist with Pan Britannica Industries, becoming chairman in 1972. It was here that Dr Hessayon formulated the idea for his Expert guides to gardening.

A steady stream of Experts followed the publication of Be Your Own Gardening Expert, each one maintaining the basic formula of down-to-earth writing with pictures, charts and photographs. In the British Bestsellers list for the 1980s there were two Experts in the Top 10. In 1993 Dr Hessayon received the first-ever Lifetime Achievement 'Oscar' at the National British Book Awards. He was also awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Gold Veitch Memorial Medal for his outstanding contribution to the advancement and improvement of the science and practice of horticulture. In 1999 Dr Hessayon was awarded a Guinness World Record Certificate for being Britain's 'bestselling non-fiction author of the 1990s'. In 2012 he was included in the Daily Mail list of '60 truly great Elizabethans' for 'teaching millions of us how to garden'.

Despite his resolve to stay out of the limelight there have been further awards along the way - a Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Garden Media Guild, three Honorary Doctorates and an OBE in 2007. There are over 28 Expert titles in 22 languages, and in Britain their sales continue to dominate the gardening paperback lists. The Vegetable & Herb Expert continues to be the No.1 bestseller. Now an active octogenarian, Dr Hessayon has more gardening Experts in the pipeline and he serves as the Design and Editorial Consultant for the non-gardening Experts. Retirement has to wait.

"I would say that the Expert Books have been the biggest innovation in gardening publications since the death of William Robinson in 1938" - Dr Brent Elliott (Librarian, Royal Horticultural Society)

This book has been a great source of information in selecting flowering plants for my garden. As far as I am concerned, it is a 'must' if you want to avoid planting plants that are unsuitable for your garden's soil pH and type, climate limitations, aspect, etc. Even skimming through the pages has brought unknown plants to my attention and thus prompted me to purchase seeds of these, thus introducing a continual expanded variety of flowers within my garden. The information keeps me on the right course in the care of my plants, yet at the same time allowing room for risk taking which often pays off. The format of the book is easily followed and the layout simple and uncluttered. Excellent book! - one which will be used over and over again till it falls to pieces, then I will just buy a new one of the same!

A great book to have with you in the garden if unsure of any plants,
Contains all the information on garden flowers/ soils and pests and there prefered growing enviroment.
What I have found is that many glossy papers advertise flowers and they look great but after a quick read through of this book it becomes clear that they wouldnt be ideal for my garden or that they need a lot of TLC.
A lot of information in a very clear format.

As with all Dr Hessayon Book this is a great addition to your collection.

I have just been back to college to do a NVQ in Horticulture; I didn't know anything about these books until my tutor let me have a read of it. I found this book to be a great source of information for a beginner, and I also think very keen gardeners will also use the book as the information is vast.

It covers what kind of plants can and can not be used in certain soil type, also covers soil structures.

The book has some very good photos, some you will probably know and some you may not. It tells you all about the plant, where to plant them, how far apart, how big they will get.

The book covers pruning of the plants, also lists diseases that can cause damage and even gives the cure.

The book is simply written and well set out. The Dr Hessayon books are fantastic and you will use it all the time.

The book is a guide to what and where to plant your flowering plants, covers annuals, perennials, garden bulbs even alpines. Huge varieties of flowers are covered in this book and a great help to me on my course.

Easy to understand English, great pictures and full of great information for the novice gardener.

This is most excellent book, The Millenium Edition is the copy purchased, though this isnt always clear through Amazon as there are approx 4 version of this book under 1 ISBN. So make sure you get the copy you want.
I bought it for my working practice as an Artist, but also as a budding gardener. It is fully comprehensive and has great detail of all kinds of flowers.
Arrange A-Z it has on the page an illustrated painting of the flower and then a actual photo and then the various information for the flower inbetween. Very easy to understand and fully comprehensive. Good Study tool!

Reading one of Dr Hessayon's books offers all the excitement of reading a car service manual or a nautical almanac, but in the same way this series of Hessayon's are utterly indispensible toools for a gardener as the other two publications are for a mechanic or a sailor. This book is, like all his others, a simple, reliable, well informed instruction book, no more no less.
