An enjoyable read 5 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
It seems that Lis Howell is not a prolific writer - this appears to be a sideline to her TV work. Her earlier book wasn't highly rated here on Amazon, but if this book has anything to go by, she is improving with age!

I really enjoyed The Flower Arranger .... it has overtones of a Midsomer Murders. The characters were believable and varied, the plot baffling enough to keep me interested without annoying red herrings being constantly thrown around. The final whodunnit exposed is fast paced and surprising and there is a gentle love interest weaving through it all for any romantics out there. I liked the country village setting and I hope the author will write more books like this in future.

Murder in the church 19 Oct 2008
By Damaskcat TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Phyllis - one of the flower arranging team at All Saints - is found dead in the church apparently from natural causes. Suzy Spencer is not the only one who thinks there might be more to the death than meets the eye. There are many secrets lurking under the surface of the peaceful village and more deaths will occur before the secret of the killer is finally revealed. I enjoy reading crime novels set in villages and this is one of the best. The characters are believable and the village politics is well portrayed. The descriptions of the northern countryside bring the area to life. The plot twists and turns and the final unmasking of the murderer is exciting and for me unexpected as I had not identified the right person. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys such authors as Veronica Heley, Simon Brett, and Jill Paton Walsh.

By J. S. Bundy VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I am an avid reader of who-dunnits and have a particular soft spot for insular, rural, parochial mysteries! This first in a sequence, The Norbridge Chronicles, from Lis Howell ticks all my boxes and more besides.

This well written book takes us on a journey through various murders occurring in and around the parish church of Tarnfield. There appears to be a common theme pertaining to the Book of Isaiah, and more curiously, the language of flowers running through these incidents.

Newly separated Suzy Spencer, mother and free lance TV producer, teams up with the unlikely partner, in all senses of the word, recently widowed Robert Clark, to get to the bottom of it all. There are enough twists and red herrings to keep the reader guessing right to the end and, for once, I really didn't guess who-dunnit!

I enjoyed the theological undertones underlying the action and also found my self quite drawn into the battle of traditional Churuch views against modern methods and getting 'bums on seats' thinking. I look forward to The Norbride Chronicles becoming a regular feature of my extensive reading pile.
