Book Description

8 Sep 2009
Mizzis Horrocks' class of seven year olds is about to perform their nativity play at Flint Street Junior School for the proud mums and dads - and the occasional social worker. Squabbles arise when Gabriel wants to play Mary, the Star grumbles he's not a proper star like they have at NASA, Herod won't stop waving to his mum and dad and the subversive Innkeeper is determined to liven up the traditional script. And then the stick insect escapes...The children are played by adults, who later play their parents so the set changes to reflect the difference in scale. This warm, witty play is an ideal alternative to the usual Christmas fare with original lyrics set to the tunes of Christmas carols.

Anybody who remembers the TV production will love this. Well written & thought out for the stage by Tim Firth. As a member of an 'Am Dram' group's play selection committee I read it as a possible for our November slot. A good antidote to the usual Christmas theatre faire! Some technical difficulties: with the need for 'large' furniture in the first act to give the impression that the actors are small children - as well as a NASA space suit on the props list! But alll in all well worth a look with a view to performing- could be a lot of fun to do.

This is the stage version of the TV play, with some necessary adaptations and alterations. If you love the TV version, you'll adore this too. Briefly, it is about a primary school nativity play, with adult actors playing the children. Tim Firth also wrote Calendar Girls, which will give an idea of the quality of the script! Sadly, I haven't yet directed this, as we can't cast it. However would be an excellent choice for a thriving am-dram company.
