Product Description

A book so important we refuse to charge for it.

Julien Smith has delivered a surprise, a confrontation, a book that will push you, scare you and possibly stick with you for years to come.

The idea is simple: your flinch mechanism can save your life. It shortcircuits the conscious mind and allows you to pull back and avoid danger faster than you can even imagine it’s there.

But what if danger is exactly what you need?

What if facing the flinch is the one best way to get what you want?

Here’s a chance to read the book everyone will be talking about, before they do.

What are you afraid of? Here's how to find out.

About the Author

Julien Smith is a New York Times bestselling author and speaker who has been involved in organizing online communities for over 15 years, from early BBSes and flashmobs to the social web as we know it today.

Along with being the co-author of Trust Agents, one of the social web’s most recognized books, he is a contributor to GQ, Sirius Satellite Radio, Cosmopolitan, the CBC, and more.

Julien's work is often about leaning into discomfort and pain, into self-examination and discipline, intending both to provoke and unbalance. The lessons from The Flinch came from self-defense professionals, security experts, weightlifters, parkour practitioners, and more.

This book is crammed with amazing advice that exposes those annoying gremlins that hide in your subconscious mind telling you everything you "can't" do and shows you how to brush them aside and banish self doubt.

It is a great piece of work that I will continue to refer to whenever I feel 'the flinch' trying to demotivate me, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars A brutish, but useful book. 28 Oct 2012
By SamJ
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Flinch is a self-improvement book that has a very focussed attitude; such is the necessity of a free, succinct Kindle edition. It focuses on "The Flinch", what I interpret the author to believe is the natural human instinct of fear and lack of confidence, in order to protect ourselves from harm. The author asserts that this prevents us from reaching our full potential.

I shall initially say that the author comes across as very brutish, almost intimidating with his writing style. The manner in which the book is written seems to suggest that you are worthless and weak because of this natural (note, we can't help instinctive biological instincts) human reaction. As a result, I came out of this book feeling somewhat uncomfortable with what it had to say; it's not written in a very warming tone.

I'd also suggest that the book is too prescriptive in its treatment of "The Flinch". Whilst avoiding such "flinch-like reactions" may have its uses, I found myself wondering throughout the book, "Well, if everyone behaved with this bull in a china shop type manner, it wouldn't be a very good place to be". He cites an example of someone drinking a morning coffee, what I see to be as a metaphor for comfort. He states you should be challenging this comfort zone. But why should you? If you're happy and content with life, why go on to tell yourself that you want out?

On a positive note, I can certainly take positives from the book. I'd certainly recommend reading it at least. His experiments are good (although even now, breaking a mug still seems pointless to me) and you can gain a lot from them. Using "The Flinch" as a tool for dealing with minor issues, such as confidence with strangers, or starting a new hobby is very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept 23 Mar 2012
By lisa
Format:Kindle Edition
I wasn't sure what I would get when I downloaded The Flinch. But it was free, and to be honest I really liked the picture of the man with the scrunched up face for the cover. But within... even if you don't actually do the things he asks, like go stand in a cold shower, take the concepts to heart. I am a slave of the flinch reflex as he describes it time and time again, all the time, every day, sometimes every hour. I have grown far too afraid to do new things or go outside of my self-made and ever shrinking comfort zone. Just reading this book and keeping the word `flinch' in m mind has made me do things and take risks where before I wouldn't have. And guess what, my life is a little bit richer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short sharp and very punchy!! 13 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've just read The Flinch by Julien Smith because someone who read my book, This We Know, said she had made both books her favourites.

So I downloaded it straight away and read it that very evening. I am so glad that I did as it allowed me to remove the last vestige of fear associated with me shouting from the rooftops about my writing. Great book and also unbeleivably free as part of the Domino Project. Eternal thanks Julien, yours unflinchingly, a fellow scribe, wayseer and changemaker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immensely wise and thought-provoking book 14 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Julien Smith has written a very important book. I quite simply loved this book and it has had a massive impact on me since reading it.

It led me to seriously and honestly assess every area of my life in which 'The Flinch' (fear) has stopped me making progress. I have changed many of those areas and aspects of my thinking, it would not be overstating it to say reading it has changed my life.

I really envied Julien's wisdom reading this but The Flinch is an empowering book that really makes you believe you CAN do anything you set out to do.

I think I have recommended it to just about everyone I know. It's a quick and easy read. And best of all its FREE!

Go on download it. Best thing you'll do today!

4.0 out of 5 stars A short sharp shock, great stuff. 8 Jun 2013
By David R
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I Can't really fault it. I might even have gone for full stars.

It's free, so that's good. But free often means poorly written. This is reassuringly well written, a joy to read.

It's short, so short I'd recommend it to anyone. But it's done more for me and my stage fright than the book I previously read on stage fright. Bring me the stage and all the sensations it offers.

Thank you Julien.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful book 3 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It takes a basic, fairly unrevelationary idea summed up in one sentence, and repeats it a billion times. After the thousandeth reiteration I gave up reading.

I read the book and thought it an interesting angle on a much written subject. I am not sure how useful it is but it should provide a framework to help anyone wanting to improve themselves and their situation
