About the Author

Sirish Rao is one of the most exciting new voices in contemporary Indian writing. He has authored 16 books, ranging from novels and children's books to re-tellings of myths, and collections of pop art; several have won international awards. His writing reflects his interests.

Hailing from the Gond tribe of Madhya Pradesh in India, Bhajju Shayam's captivating visuals and easy storytelling style fuse his perceptions of the modern world with his tribe's unique visual language. His work has been exhibited widely in India, as well as in Milan, The Hague, Paris and London.

Perhaps the most versatile artist of the Gond art tradition, Bhajju uses inherited forms in very current and expressive ways, while experimenting with innovative subjects and new ideas. "There are new influences in my work, but my art is still the same", he has said, reflecting upon his success. "I never expected this kind of response; I thought people would find my way of looking at the world odd".

Gita Wolf has written more than 14 books for children and adults. Considered one of the most original and creative voices in contemporary Indian publishing, she has pursued her interest in exploring and experimenting with the form of the book and its status as a revered cultural object. Several of her children's books have won major international awards.

Format: Hardcover
i bought this book on the strength of the images, hand printing and overall charm of Bhajju Shyami's illustrations in 'The Night Life of Trees'. unfortunately this one seems just a little more commercially produced- maybe to get a greater colour range), there are still very nice details- elements of hand printing, the quality illustrations (still beautiful but just lacking a little soul by not being block printed) and the poop out fish is great. i would just have paid more for a little more charm, however a nice book- i'm still glad i bought it.

A beautiful, poignant and ultimately uplifting retelling of the little mermaid. The block print edition is lovely. My daughter and I loved it.

Both highly recommended reading and a superb addition to a bibliophile's personal collection 9 Oct. 2009
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
The collaborative effort of India's Gond tribal artist Bhaiju Shyam, and the two superbly talented storytellers Sirish Rao and Gita Wolf, "Flight Of The Mermaid" is a retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale story of 'The Little Mermaid'. Rao, Wolf, and Shyam have reformed this timeless tale into a compelling feminist parable on the conundrums of love and choice. The book itself is a memorable and impressive work of the publisher's art being partly letter-pressed by hand on tea-stained handmade paper. "Flight Of The Mermaid" is both highly recommended reading and a superb addition to a bibliophile's personal collection.

Beautiful marine colours and a wonderful tale

for children. They wanted to touch the colours

and stroke them.

One child held the page against his cheek and cried because the page was not wet!
