Book Description

An unforgettable standalone novel from Nicky Singer, author of the sensational, award-winning FEATHER BOY.

Twelve-year-old Jess is grieving for her beloved Aunt Edie, and anxiously awaiting the birth of her twin brothers, when she finds a mysterious glass flask hidden in a desk. The flask is beautiful to Jess, and soon she starts to believe that it contains a magical life-force. When her half-brothers are born critically ill, Jess becomes convinced that their survival depends on what’s happening to the flask…

Through Jess's stunning narration, Nicky Singer explores the meaning of life, and the interconnected nature of all things - in a way which is entirely accessible to young readers.

Review

Praise for FEATHER BOY:

“…a brilliant debut novel that really does merit the category title of Book You Cannot Put Down.”
Ian Hislop, Blue Peter Awards Judge

“Each copy should come with a torch for a spellbinding midnight conclusion.”
Telegraph

“Inventive, original and full of surprises, it’s the sort of dazzling debut novel that most publishers would fall over themselves to snap up…”
T2

“Feather Boy is the most intelligent book for youngsters I’ve read for a very long time. Every 12-year-old will see a bit of themselves in Robert and won’t be able to put this book down until Feather Boy’s emotional, thought-provoking climax. Fabulous.”
Funday Times

“This first children’s book is a winner.”

About the Author

Nicky has written four novels for adults, two books of non-fiction and six works for young people. Her first children’s novel Feather Boy has been published in 28 countries. It won the Blue Peter ‘Book of the Year’ Award, was adapted for TV (winning a BAFTA for Best Children’s Drama) and then commissioned by the National Theatre as a musical with lyrics by Don Black and music by Debbie Wiseman. In 2010 Nicky was asked by Glyndebourne to adapt her novel Knight Crew (a re-telling of the King Arthur legend set in contemporary gangland) for an opera with music by Julian Philips. It was the first time Glyndebourne had ever commissioned an opera from a teen novel and the making of the show was filmed by the BBC for a three-part documentary series presented by Gareth Malone. She is currently at work on Island, a play about ice-bears and moral responsibility for the National Theatre’s Primary 1 series. Nicky lives with her family in Brighton.

5.0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!! 23 Aug. 2012
By Debbie
Format:Paperback
This is a beautiful book! The story is one of magic and wonder, deep emotion, and interesting, well-defined characters. Ms. Singer has a warm, open writing style, and she draws you in immediately with her careful rendering of characters you will grow to care about. The way she handles the flask itself is truly amazing. You will not want to put down this book. If you love The Book Thief, if you love Wonder, you will love The Flask.
