This single series Superhero show, has finally made it to Region 2.
The series is a bit darker and follows the comics, more so than other Dc comics shows of the time. Some of The Flash's Rogues include the Mirror Master, The Trickster and many more.
Just to give the series even more class is the music by Shirley Walker, who was responcible for the classic Batman Animated series of the time.
A must by for all comic fans!

The Flash * * * *

Way back in 1989, Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo had the clever idea of taking DC Comics The Flash creation to the TV screen with a 22-part initial series. Although it ran for one season during 1990-91 on US television, it hit the Nielsen ratings block wall and was ultimately cancelled. It's taken 20 years to hit DVD and when you look back, you now realise what a cracking series this actually was.

John Wesley Shipp played the title character Barry Allen, aka The Flash, aided and abetted by Amanda Pays playing Star Labs scientist Tina Magee, Alex Désert playing fellow forensic scientist Julio Mendez, Mike Genovese playing the irracissable Lt. Warren Garfield, Vito de Ambrosio playing Officer Tony Bellows and Biff Maynard as Officer Michael Murphy. These last two provide many humorous moments in the series, and a joy to watch at times.

The 22-episode run covers quite a range of stories and there are some excellent ones in there. The Trickster episodes, maniacally played by Mark Hamill, are a proper treat of wackiness. The first episode was funny enough, however, the finale was a must see for any Flash fan. It's been a quite a while since I've enjoyed the finale of any series quite as much as I have on this. Though the episodes also bring up the Trackman character - a person that mind controls even The Flash and The Ghost, a time travelling creation from the 30s that now attempts to take on Central City in the present. We even have his doppelganger opposite repeated later on in the season!

I've been waiting for a very, very long time for this superb show to appear on dvd. Never has a tv show so accurately and beautifully captured the essence, atmosphere and feeling of comic books and a classic comic book hero. Like most of the truly great genre shows of the nineties this one was just to good to last and was predictably killed off after its first season. An absolute crime of a decision by its parent network!
Beautifully shot with first rate production values and true comic book style writing the flash is a wonderful treat for comic book and non comic book fans alike. However, to be honest, it will probably appeal more strongly to the former. Buy it! You'll love it!

For a Flash fan such as myself, I have wanted Warner Bros to release this excellent series over here in the U.K. for years.

It seems that the best releases such as complete seasons of Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman, Batman Beyond (or Batman of The Future as it's known over here) Superman are all release as should be just in the States.

Wake up warner bros!!! There's plenty of fans over here too!!!

The Flash Complete series advertised here is a Dutch Region 2 DVD boxset so will play on U.K. players, the packaging is not in English, but that really didn't matter for me because the episodes play as originally aired.

John Wesley Shipp is fantastic as Barry Allen/The Flash, the pilot is slightly weak, but the episodes got better & better as they went along. Tina McGee is also a solid charatcer as Barry's partner/Doctor played by Amanda Pays, there's plenty of humour throughout the series too. (Mark Hamill does a crazy turn as The Trickster and was that popular they brought him back.)

Some great guest stars as well, (Jason Bernard as Desmond Powell/Nightshade, Mark hamill as The Trickster, Michael Nadier as Nicholas Pike) all add to the flavour of the show.

The episodes are spread over 4 discs, the discs are flipper discs so when you watch the first disc & the episodes finish, eject, turn over & you're ready to go again.

All in all, I am happy with the DVD Boxset, just a shame I had to get an import, but very happy that I now have the series to watch whenever I wish.

If you like retro T.V. series that take you back to when you were a kid, buy this because I remember watching this for the first time & was knocked out that The Flash was on T.V., that same feeling came back when I watched the DVD. (The kid in you never dies....)

Enjoy.

This is the first episode of an (unfortunately) short lived series. The costume could have been done better, and a few liberties have been taken with the characters, but the episode is good enough for the flaws to be forgiven. John Wesley Shipp is a delight as Barry Allen/The Flash, and the other characters can give you a laugh if nothing else. Amanda Pays is also a charming person to watch, and Alex Desert always looks like he's having a good time. I thoroughly recommend this episode, and the others in the series (only four others available on VHS Pal format, alas!) to anyone who likes a good yarn about 20th century legendary heroes.
