There's a comment on the back cover comparing James M Cain to Hemmingway which the author himself doesn't seem to enjoy but I can see the comparison. The dialogue is first class in four of the five five stories, all but one written in the first person, the exception being Mildred Pierce. This is also the longest and for me the least enjoyable.

As for the others they are brilliant entertainment. Filled with troubled characters the stories themselves don't over rely their weirdness. Having said that, the female lead in Double Indemnity is fantastic; both main characters in Serenade are similarly original; The Butterfly is marvellous and the Postman is so much better even than the films. Why we have to buy seconhand copies of this omnibus edition I can't explain as someone should get this reprinted ASAP. Fantastic original stuff.

What's not to like? The book came on time, I know the novels, it was a replacement for the book I lost some time ago - Cain is a wonderful writer - The films didn't turn out too bad either, Double Indemnity is my all time favourite film noir - treat yourself and try Cain if you haven't read him before

The book arrived in very good condition and I am enjoying reading, first, Mildred Pierce. I had been looking for a copy of this novel for some time and am more than pleased to have received it within an Omnibus. I look forward to reading the other novels. Excellent value for money
