Book Description

Untold centuries ago, the Archipelago was ruled by the Alder—mysterious beings who vanished, leaving behind only scattered artefacts of unknown power, called Vestige. Sometimes, a person will be lucky or unlucky enough to discover that each piece of Vestige has its own tale to tell…

The Fisherman’s Net

A humble fisherman in a village of the coast of the island of Linde buys a trinket at the market, which he discovers is Vestige. The poor man soon becomes the best fisherman in the village and marvels at his newfound wealth. One day, he ensnares a most unusual catch: a Chimaera sea maiden that isn’t meant to exist. And he’s not sure if he can let her go.

Vestigial Tales are stories set in the world of the award-winning Micah Grey series. Step behind the circus ring from Pantomime, the theatre of Shadowplay, and more…

“Pantomime by Laura Lam took me into a detailed and exotic world, peopled by characters that I’d love to be friends with . . . and some I’d never want to cross paths with.”
– Robin Hobb, internationally bestselling author of the Farseer trilogy

More About the Author

Laura Lam was raised near San Francisco, California, by two former Haight-Ashbury hippies. Both of them encouraged her to finger-paint to her heart's desire, colour outside of the lines, and consider the library a second home. This led to an overabundance of daydreams.

She relocated to Scotland to be with her husband, whom she met on the internet when he insulted her taste in books. She almost blocked him but is glad she didn't. At times she misses the sunshine.

Telling a tale not centred around any of the main characters, but going more into the mythology of the world... A fisherman finds a piece of 'vestige' (strange items that hold magic, that we see throughout the series) that grants him the ability to be the best fisherman in the village. One day, he catches something so incredibly extraordinary, which gives us a truly wonderful tale. And uh, that's not meant to be a pun, I swear.

This is truly beautiful, emotive and only makes you yearn for more of Lam's writing. The piece of vestige we get to see is described so delicately, and you can easily visualise how it looks and moves perfectly. The Mer is instantly a character in her own right. I loved her power and quiet determination.

This short story packs a bitter, sharp punch that is satisfying - without saying too much, I'm glad the short ended this way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read! 4 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
An interesting, short moral tale from the author of Pantomime and Shadowplay. This novella made for the perfect fable with its balance between doing what's right and wrong. I'm really enjoying finding out about the powers of the Vestige. Laura Lam continues the use of her magical and captivating language as she threads a tale of the dangers of greed.

The Fisherman's Net is a standalone novella despite being situated in the world of the Pantomime series. I love that each of these tales add a little something extra to the series and I can't wait to read more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet! 14 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The second of Laura Lam’s Vestigial Tales short stories is considerably shorter than the first (The Snake Charm), but is just as well-told.

The story itself is pretty simple, and is as the blurb says – but what impressed me were the aspects it leaves out. The style of the story, for one – it’s written very much like a classic fable, which alone makes it stand apart from its predecessor. It’s a nice touch that doesn’t attempt to milk too much out of a story that’s better left as short and punchy as it is.

Another thing I loved was Laura’s description of the Chimaera sea maiden that the fisherman catches. No sweet and pretty Disney mermaids here; this is a creature that’s clearly enthralling to humans, but has that edge of something dangerous that makes it a better idea to leave them the hell alone. You know, if one is smart enough to take the hint…

Also, I’m really enjoying the exploration of various types of Vestige to be found in this fictional world from the Pantomime novels. These magical gadgets have fascinated me from the start, so having this as the common element, if you will, in these short stories is pretty pleasing to me.

Bring on the next one – and, hopefully one day, a print collection… *Goes off into a bookworm daydream*

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully realized, haunting fable 8 July 2014
By AndreaGS - Published on Amazon.com

This story has the wonderful familiarity of a fable or fairytale, but set in Laura Lam’s world of Ellada. I read books of fairytales and fables ragged when I was a kid, so I knew where this tale was going, but the path it takes to get there is what’s interesting.

Like Lam’s other short, this one has a piece of Vestige—a magical artifact from times since past—as its focal point. When the fisherman discovers what he has, the question become: how far will he go in exploiting his newfound powers?

This piece stands on its own; there’s no need to read the prior short, or Pantomime and Shadowplay. But I’d highly recommend reading her other works; reading the shorts after the novels feels like finding Easter eggs—bits and pieces that flesh out the world and its people even more.

I’ll definitely be going back for another read!

I think Laura deserves more credit for the quality of her writing. This is a rich story steeped in classic fairytale imagination. The characters come to life and you can be there with them. I have not read her other books but now I will.
