I've just seen that "The First XI - Winning Organisations in Australia" has just moved to 7th (from 8th) on the list of the best selling business books in Australia, compiled quarterly by the Australian Institute of Management. This has prompted me to share some personal observations.
For a business book first published in 2002 (2nd Edition, 2007), this sales performance is an impressive testament to the ongoing practical resonance and applicability of the key messages in this easy-to-read book. Moreover, in a post-GFC world, in my opinion the authors' findings continue to have direct relevance to organisations aspiring to be recognised as Winning organisations.
The Winning Wheel framework was developed from the detailed analysis of 11 leading (winning) Australian organisations. This framework provides the reader with a practical foundation for understanding the ingredients for sustainable above-average performance, particularly for Australian-based organisations. But given the research results are broadly consistent with other noted international studies (Good to Great, Built to Last, In Search of Excellence), the key messages in this book have applicability well beyond Australia's shores. Moreover, the real life examples drawn from the 11 comparator organisations (re-validated in the 2007 Edition) bring the theory to life.
The book ends with the question: "Will your organisation be nominated by your peers for inclusion in this book in 10 years time?"
For those who answer "Yes!", the WinningInsights suite of Web-based diagnostic surveys provide the practical means to take the action recommended in the final Chapter of the book. Check-out these assessments, targeted at the leadership group in each organisation. Each assessment enables the leaders in an organisation to identify and prioritise initiatives that address each of the 9 Dimensions of the Winning Wheel framework ... and, importantly, link to additional resources to help achieve necessary breakthroughs.
