Product Description

A prequel to Roy Clarke's original Last of the Summer Wine and featuring Peter Sallis, First of the Summer Wine takes place in a small Yorkshire village. The action revolves around the antics of the young Compo, Clegg and Seymour and their usually level headed female counterparts, all of whom are grappling with the world around them, their youth, and their experiences with the opposite sex usually with hilarious consequences. Set between May and September 1939 as Hitler's Nazi Germany and Great Britain become increasingly poised for war the characters lives are about to be changed forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal Present for Dad 12 July 2011
Format:DVD
I bought this for my dad who is a big fan of Last of the Summer Wine. He first saw this on TV and instantly dropped a hint that it would be something he would like to get. The writing of the series is great as the characters personalities and background match uncannily to Last of the Summer Wine. Furthermore, the cast give a realistic character link to the cast in Last of the Summer Wine. This is a must but for Last of the Summer Wine fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent series 11 July 2011
Format:DVD
This is a well written series that shows us how our favourite Summer Wine characters coped in their youth.Once again the Grim Reaper is part of the cast.In Last Of The Summer Wine death was a part of the cast as they where all older and in First death was involved as they where soon to be fighting in World War II.They capture the characters so well that they all instantly recognisable. The actors are all very well chosen.Plot-lines are very well thought up and there is the still the promise of numerous belly laughs.Roy Clarke proves yet again that he is an excellent writer and it is very nice touch to see Peter Sallis as Norman Clegg's Father.

For fans of classic British comedy in general and Last Of The Summer Wine in particular this is a worthy addition to such a persons DVD collection.Amazon are selling it for a fine price & so I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 4 July 2011
Format:DVD
A very worthy and entertaining prequel series that sticks in spirit and style to its more famous sister series.
Notable is the soundtrack - works very well to portray the era and setting and the main theme tune is particularly memorable. Oh and look out for Peter Sallis who has a small role playing his own Father!

This prequel series is a wonderful addition to any LOTSW fan's dvd collection. I wish some background material on the making of this program could be produced and included on the dvds, but I'm very pleased that the Beeb has finally gotten this much of the series out!!

It appears that the cast did a lot of work to tailor their performances into wonderful portrayals of younger versions of Clegg, Compo, Foggy, Seymour, Nora, Ivy, Wally, etc. Peter Sallis and Roy Clark favourite Maggie Ollerenshaw do a wonderful Mr. & Mrs. Clegg. The sets and attention to period detail are incredible. The pilot is especially poignant at the end, with the transposition of a Hitler speech over a scene of young people dancing at a church social.

If you loved LOTSW, this series is not to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good for what its meant to be 18 Jun 2011
Format:DVD
If Anyone whos not seen this before and is going to buy it as they have the Last Of The Summer Wine Series then they must be aware that this is not Last Of The Summer Wine and should not expect it to be the same. This is about a group of kids living their lives before the breakout of war and what theu get upto. The series is very funny in its own right and should be taken as is. The casting of all the characters is spot on and some really shine and you can actually imagine that its what they would have looked like when Last Of The Summer Wine were younger.

I'm currently waiting for series two as not seen it when it was broadcast, but what I have seen so far it would be worth a few more episodes. I'm sure they could squeeze more episodes in before they get called up for war.
