Book Description

The late Reginald Bretnor (1911-1992) was never a prolific writer -- he wrote only a handful of books and about 100 short stories (and more than 120 short-short "Feghoots" under his Grendel Briarton pseudonym) -- over a 45-year writing career. In addition to wars, weaponry, and science fiction, Bretnor's broad interests included cats. (And puns. Did we mention the horrible puns?) These subjects are all touched on in this collection. A sly sense of humor permeates Bretnor’s fiction, and as we work to digitize his complete body of work and present it to readers in a series of Reginald Bretnor Megapacks, we know you’ll have fun reading it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just brilliant. 7 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These stories are just brilliant - from the groan inducing puns of Ferdinand Feghoot to the longer stories like Cat, The Murderer's Circle and Dr Birdmouse. A pleasure to read and just so different. I absolutely love this and can't wait for more of Reginald Bretnor's material to become available on the Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bretnor Comes From The Voodvork Out 6 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't know how long ago it was when I first came across "The Gnurrs Come From The Voodvork Out" (it must be getting on for fifty years) but when I got my new Kindle this was the first title I downloaded. And I wasn't disappointed. Bretnor is not a traditional SF writer; he's a unique fantasy author with a totally original take on life as it is and as it might be. This First Omnibus is one long(ish) list of surprises and delights - and at the price scarcely a risky investment to discover a very different kind of writer. Roll on the second and subsequent omnibuses!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling tales 5 Dec. 2014
By Mondoro TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A sparkling collection of stories by Reginald Bretnor with touches of his alter ego Grendel Briarton in several tales such as 'Sugar Plum', where the difference of one letter in the word 'Uninhabited' creates a rather unexpected outcome for a visitor to a new planet, and throughout a sense of fun that can be wicked as in the fanciful 'Aunt's Flight' with its clever punchline, and 'Maybe Just a Little One', where nuclear power is generated from an unusual source. The collection finishes with the usual dreadful punning vignettes from Briaton.

Again, one the great Megapacks bargains

Bretnor's imagination knows no bounds. Some of these stories will have you groaning but you will not be able to resist reading just one more. Then just one more. Then .......

some stories seem slightly dated but still a good read especially if you like anthology's, plenty of variation with good ideas.
