Product Description

Kurdish Iraq and the village of Goptapa is the location, because of its beauty and hopes for the future, but also because it has a tragic past.

Influenced by 1001 Nights, The First Movie is a magic realist documentary, one of the first of its kind. It certainly doesn t skirt the suffering of Goptapa but, rather, it shows how such suffering co-habits with other things, such as wonder and imaginative development.

One little boy in the village said he d like to fly slowly over Goptapa. In The First Movie, that might just be possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars You must see this movie 3 Feb 2012

This documentary movie has *everything* and is indescribably moving. The cinematography is spectacular. The music hauntingly adds to the images. The human stories told are both heartbreaking and uplifting. The efforts of these children to tell their own stories demonstrates the emotional intelligence and wisdom of children and gives one hope. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

One of the most beautiful and moving works of art I have ever seen.
The movie shows a small village in Irak where the filmmaker shows the children classic movies for children and then gives the children camera's to film their own lives and their own stories. The life of the village, its past and dreams all come out through the eyes of its children. It leaves you with the knowledge that though its horrors are very visible even in this out of the way place Iraq is beautiful, its children are wise and funny and that the visual of men gathered in a mosque can be a sight of pleasant community life, of softness and safety, and if that isn't a reversal of expectation nothing is.

The film does not show a lot about the past, the bombings with chemicals, but it still is present. In the eyes of the children you see a lot of joy. And at the same time this makes me sad. They are so fragile.
The music was not new for me. It is beautiful and at the same time also frightening (symphony 3 of Gorecki!).
These combinations do the magic. They move me very much.
The soft voice of Mark Cousins and his curiosity makes that complete.
