Biography

How do you build a narrative for a story as rich and multifaceted as the life of Joan Baez? Baez herself is not especially inclined to introspection, or to the backwards glance. Often wrongly perceived as a naïve idealist, she is, in her own distinctive way, a pragmatist to the core with her eyes fixed squarely on what’s right in front of her. As an activist, she has viewed her life ... Read more in Amazon's Joan Baez Store

Product Description

'The first lady of folk', Joan Baez, is a major addition to our on-going series of classic American folk recordings. Featured here are four early albums: "Joan Baez in San Francisco", "Folksingers 'Round Harvard Square", "Joan Baez" and her breakthrough album, "Joan Baez Vol. 2", after which the previous albums took off even further. Still touring and recording today Joan Baez remains a force to be reckoned with, so boo to Vietnam and hooray for 'The first lady of folk'. Includes fully detailed liner notes covering her career.

I bought this collection because the only copies I have of these early albums of Joan Baez are on audio tape. The sound quality is excellent on these discs so congratulations to Jasmine records for their release. If there are any fans of Joan Baez who are missing these albums in their collection I heartily recommend this release.

You'll find Joan Baez' first four albums here; two from independent labels, which she subsequently had withdrawn, and the other two for Vanguard. The first two albums were obviously somewhat impromptu, and a few of the songs are pop numbers. What prompted her to seek their withdrawal is not specified, but in any event they are now out of copyright. The Vanguard sessions are superior, and overall the compilation is folk oriented. It will appeal to her legion of fans, but I find it difficult to listen to her voice over an extended period, because there is a disconcerting shrillness in the upper register which does not fall easily on the ear.

This is not a collection of great songs, performed by an artist at the top of her game. Some are just the first efforts of a competent guitarist with a good voice. Other tracks are oddities as Joan Bayez struggles to find her niche and potential exploiters of her talent try to fit her to their ideas of what will sell. Some, however, show what is to come. All in all a pleasant enough collection, with the trademark voice growing in confidence and the song choices becoming more focused and appropriate for her style. Worth buying if you already have the classic albums.

My Word! I am enjoying this latest release from Joan so much. This release contains all Joan's earliest recordings from the very beginning of her amazing musical career in 1958. Joan is The Original. Those of us who have studied the modern music phenomena are only too aware of Joan's pride of place as one of the earliest popular artists to use music as a vehicle of constructive protest at that most important and crucial time in history where civil rights won the day and changed our world for the better forever.

If you listen to Joan you are going to at some point have tears in your eyes. That is her power. How beautiful! Thanks Lord for Joan and her music.
