Amazon Review

Michael Garrick is a young man with a dream job. As a lawyer in the White House, he rubs shoulders with the top men and women in the country. And that includes Shadow, the Secret Service code name for the First Daughter, Nora Hartson, who likes Michael a lot. It's difficult dating the First Daughter; Michael and Nora are never alone, and Nora has a rebellious streak about the constant surveillance she is under, so it is no surprise when she encourages Michael to lose the tail when they are out one evening. But when they see Edgar Simon, the President's chief advisor and Michael's boss, in a gay bar, they decide to follow him. What they see will put Michael's career--and his life--in danger.

Back at the White House, Michael talks to one of his colleagues about the legal and ethical issues of the Edgar Simon situation. She says she will get back to him, but before she does she is murdered, and Michael is on the list of suspects. Nora could corroborate his alibi, but suddenly it's impossible to get hold of her. She doesn't answer his calls and, when Michael finally does speak to her, she doesn't want to be involved, leaving him baffled and vulnerable. This is a roller coaster of a thriller, one with a unique view of the day to day dealings in the most powerful house in the world. --Otto Penzler --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining 28 Sep 2001
Format:Hardcover
One can presume from reading a short synopsis of this book that the story would be fairly predictable and unbelievable. This is true in some part, although such an outlook would fail to highlight Meltzer's enviable ability to keep the reader glued to the pages. The story does seem to be highly predictable at times, but let's be honest, most stories are. I believe the ending makes up for such shortfallings and finishes off in a magnificently unpredictable fashion. However, the ending is also where the reader starts to wonder whether such a situation like this could ever happen in real life. The chances of one of the in-house counsel of the White House being able to avoid the clutches of the FBI and all others that trail him are remote, in the most part extreme. But nevertheless, a highly entertaining read and definitely a book that you won't be able to put down. I would buy this and look forward to the next Meltzer novel I pick up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SUSPENSE LACED READING 16 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Audiobook aficionados may well remember the sterling readings by Scott Brick of "The Lion's Game" and "The Ice Limit." He's every bit as effective with his rendering of this mesmerizing tale of D.C. intrigue.

Michael Garrick, a promising young White House lawyer, is more than attracted to the President's daughter, Nora. While the path to true love has never run smooth, this path for Michael soon proves to be land mined with insurmountable obstacles.

There's a sinister plan afoot at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue masterminded by a White House insider. When Michael and Nora accidentally witness something better not seen, the attorney finds himself locked in a struggle for his very life.

Scott Brick's suspense laced reading adds luster to this timely thriller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light entertainment 6 May 2004
By HORAK
Format:Paperback
Michael Garrick is a young White House lawyer. He starts dating the First Daughter, Nora Hartson, coded Shadow by the Secret Service. One night, Nora takes Michael to a gay bar called "Pendulum", after having shaken off the Secret Service people in a rough car ride. To Michael's bewilderment, one of the patrons in the bar is Edgar Simon, lawyer to the President himself. As Simon leaves the Pendulum, Michael and Nora decide to follow him. To their surprise, Simon enters a park and hides a manila envelope inside a tree trunk. Once Simon has left, they discover that the envelope contains $ 40 000, of which Nora secretly removes $ 10 000. On their way back, as the police are about to stop Michael for speeding, Nora hides the money into the glove box, money which will be eventually discovered and confiscated by the officer. But the situation really turns bad for Michael the following day, when the First Counsel Edgar Simon claims that it was Michael who hid the envelope containing the $ 40 000 in the park... At this point Michael still isn't aware what a runaway he has embarked on.
Like other authors, Mr Meltzler uses the standard ingredients of so many espionage stories: money, the Presidential family, the White House, betrayal, drugs, greed and love. Shake them well and you get a novel like "The First Counsel". Nevertheless, the result is quite entertaining.
