Book Description

1 Mar 2001 Penguin Science
In the early 1980s, the authors published "The Monkey Puzzle" which argued that humans are 100per cent ape, a sibling species to chimps and gorillas. Dismissed at the time as "armchair theorists", research has vindicated them. This revised edition of the earlier book brings to light subsequent research.

4.0 out of 5 stars Written for me 20 Mar 2001
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book, and a book I have been looking for. The Descent of Man is of course outdated and The Blind Watchmaker focused on evolution as a whole. This was a great read although it would probably be hard reading for those with little scientific background. It is about our evolution as a species from a common ancestor of ours and the other primates, and it also explains phenomenon such as the ice ages. I learned a lot from this book and found much valued ammo against those who poo-poo evolution as the origin of man and all life. There is no god and there are facts to prove it. Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book on evolution 2 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book really put the facts down on paper about evolution. This book can be very hard to read at times because of the scientific terms and concepts. If you want to learn more about where humans come from, I highly recommend this book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The descent of pan 15 Jan 2013
By Dave TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Another 12 years on since publication Gribbin and Cherfas' thesis that chimpanzees and gorillas may be descended from a man like ancestor still doesn't seem to have gained much hold amongst either scientists or the public. That's a shame because as argued here their case seems to me to be very convincing. On the other hand they do point out that scientific theories are more likely to be believed by people who are already prejudiced in favour of them and nobody is telling me that physicists and chemists (who can do sums) aren't cleverer than palaeontologists (who for the most part wear silly hats, at least when they appear on television)
To be serious though this is good accessible pop science. It reads almost like a novel whilst still managing to present some stimulating ideas. Surely worth a few hours of any bodies time.
