I have a plethora of fitness DVDS and have used The Firm before but had stopped using the old "pink top" Firm DVDs, choosing Davina and other DVDs with more upbeat music and newer, fresher ideas. I only came across these DVDs because they were listed in the 2011 new releases and were very reasonably priced. There are 2 complete 20-minute routines plus a 10-minute special section for the abs. So I thought that I would give them a go - and I am very glad I did!
First of all, a word of warning - the sessions are only 20 minutes, so they don't waste time on getting going. Also The Firm is renowned for exercising the whole body at the same time, so you do have to learn the routines first. It may be a good idea to try these exercises without weights and it will take you some time to get the hang of them. But please persevere - I did and it does all fall into place and then you can really give all you have to the workout.
Secondly, there is an amount of "whoos" from the instructors who are very keen to tell you that the workout is fun and this may annoy some people, but the workout is very challenging and I think their calling out might be just to help them through it!
And unlike in many of the old workouts they say that things are tough, their muscles are burning and for the first time you actually get to see them sweat.
Also the cooldown is very short - I would recommend doing some extra stretching of your own, but again that should not be too big an issue.
More than anything else, a workout succeeds or fails because of the quality of the exercises, the results you get and the feeling it gives you afterwards. I got the DVD at the beginning of this month and I can now (just about) do all three workouts back to back. I am a sweating panting wreck, but the sense of achievement is mind-blowing. I am stronger and fitter and 11 pounds lighter.
Give this a try and show a little patience and the rewards will make the challenge worthwhile.
