One of the few - very few - Stephen Leather books I hadn't read so I was pleased to be able to swap to obtain this one. Sadly, it is all too apparent how much the author has developed since 1989 both with his characters and with his action writing which means this book is not that good.
It's not the passed sell by date of how Hong Kong was before the Chinese took it back from the British, it's more the paucity of action, the rather boring inclusion of little anecdotes relating to the narrator's previous years doing whatever and it's the lack of a complete character leading the story. By halfway, I didn't really mind who'd killed Sally nor why and we knew how from page one.
That said, don't let this put you off the progress of this author. If you want action thrillers, then he's your man. It's just that you have to start somewhere and 'The Fireman' wouldn't be my recommendation this time round.
