Book Description

7 Jan 2008 Spartan Warrior
Lysander is a slave in ancient Sparta, a Helot, but a chance meeting reveals his noble heritage and he is permitted to begin training as a Spartan warrior. The vestiges of his life as a slave are hard to shake off and he struggles to survive the brutal and nepotistic life of a Spartan-in-training. Worse still, his precious amulet, the Fire of Ares, is stolen from him, and with it goes some of his formidable strength. His mother had made him swear he would guard the amulet with his life, without ever telling him why. Lysander is desperate to find the missing jewel, but when he picks up the trail, it leads him to dark secrets about the few people he felt he could trust, and forces him to make a choice between his Helot friends and his Spartan instincts.

Review

'The strength of the book is the positive example of the main character, Lysander. He confronts his weaknesses, tempations and prejudices and triumphs through integrity and courage ... I have to agree with my son's verdict that this is a gripping page turner. The scary bits are tense and well spaced throug the novel' TES

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Tale of Ancient Sparta 11 Mar 2009
By Sir Furboy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This book was fast moving, interesting and with a wealth of historical detail. Aimed at younger readers, I nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is fast enough and action packed enough to satisfy the demands of its intended audience too.

Set in the glory days of ancient Sparta, the story follows a boy born of a Helot mother and Spartan father, who gains the opportunity to leave his life of drudgery for the hard Spartan warrior education. His friendship with a certain prince Leonidas will suggest where this series is heading to students of history, but for anyone else, read it for the moment. Perfect action adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPARTANS & HELOTS, Warriors & Slaves 7 Nov 2010
By Mr. William Oxley VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great book for boys and fans of historical fiction. The Fire of Ares is a part 1 of 3.

Our hero is the helot slave Lysander who is in possession of a precious amulet given to him by his mother and hidden beneath his cloak. The Helot life is harsh as they are now slaves on land that their ancestors owned and farmed on, years before the Spartans conquered them. But now then must farm the land to feed their warrior masters and live in fear from their unpredictable Spartans who do not value their life much.

The book is really well written and just long enough. The action and adventure builds up to a crescendo.
