A great book 13 Jan 2006
Format:Paperback
The Finger Eater is one of my favourite books. It is really funny and it has got good cartoons in it. Once you have started reading it you don't want to stop. I would recommend it to other six to seven year olds.

This is real Dick King-Smith magic, but in a format which is perfect for kids who are moving off reading schemes and on to real books. This Sprinters edition has 60 pages of large print and funny line drawings on each one, so the print is spaced out quite a bit, making it approachable for kids who are put off by pages of solid text. A tough little girl manages to solve a problem that has left all the grown-ups short of a finger! All my children like this one, and so do I! It has none of the potential stigma of reading scheme books for older kids. The vocabulary is not restricted to easy words (eg it contains the following: echoed, caught, disappeared, concealed) but it is easy to follow.

This series - Sprinters - are fantastic for those children who are developing independence in their reading and want a 'proper' story. They bridge the gap between the whole contrived Biff and Chip (ORT) reading scheme series and young reading books which are mostly aimed at 8 year olds. Sprinters have short chapters, large print with accessible vocabulary and provide a very engaging quick read. I bought this one (The Finger-Eater) for my daughter (aged 6) and she thoroughly enjoyed the story, so much so that she has asked for more stories by Dick King-Smith. My only word of warning is that the language in the Finger-Eater is very traditional in style and phrases like: "a useful tool with which her father was wont to draw stones..." required a bit if explanation. Nonetheless, a really engaging story and perfect for those children looking to make their first steps into the wonderful world of 'real' books.
