Product Description

Made in black & white in 1954 this cricketing based drama is quite a curio since it combines Jack Warner (Holiday Camp, The Blue Lamp; Tv's - Dixon of Dock Green) with Cricket (including cameos from many of the top stars of the day). Sam Palmer (Warner) is a cricket player who is playing the last Test match of his career. His schoolboy son, Reggie, is a budding poet who disappoints Sam by not attending the penultimate day's play. Then Reggie is suddenly invited to the home of poet and writer Alexander Whitehead (Robert Morley - The African Queen; Cromwell; Theatre of Blood). Reggie fears he will also miss the final day - and therefore Sam's last innings - but it turns out that Alexander is a cricket fan so all is not lost. * Amongst the famous cricketers on show in the film are; Len Hutton, Denis Compton, Alec Bedser, Godfrey Evans, Jim Laker & Cyril Washbrook.

A cricket drama 30 Aug 2009
Format:VHS Tape|Amazon Verified Purchase
How surprising that there are so few examples of literature set in the context of a cricket match. This VHS is a reproduction of Terence Rattigan's drama about a famous cricketer who comes to his final test game (against the Australians - the Ashes). Personal and family issues also come to the fore and these all climax in the final minutes, when the phrase 'Final Test'takes on a number of meanings.

This is an excellent view for cricket lovers, drama lovers, and connoisseurs of British TV in the 1950s. People familiar with 'Dixon of Dock Green' will be happily surprised to see Jack Warner playing the part of the famous cricketer, while Robert Morely appears as a famous poet who idolizes the cricketer (much to the amazement of the cricketer's son).

There is humour, drama, and English post-war culture in this classic. Let's hope they bring out a DVD with lots of extra features!
