Product Description

Product Description

“The following account will feature various acts common to human beings, including eating and sleeping. There will also be sex, some violence and, of course, murder.”

'The Final Report of Arlen Pickett' is a psychological thriller; a story of love and obsession, where the everyday collides with the increasingly unsettling and bizarre.

Arlen Pickett's story begins when he arrives in a British city to interview people about their sex lives. He's a market researcher who lives for his job and pretends to his colleagues that he has a family. But all that changes when he meets Beatrice, a charismatic zookeeper, during the research, and falls in love with her. Soon he's entangled in her strange tale of lies and abuse, and leaves his old life very far behind.

Arlen tells us his story with deadpan humour, leading us through twists and turns, until we reach the dark heart of his report.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept me guessing 10 Oct 2013
What a great story. Kidnapping. Murder. Sexual blackmail. And gorillas. I didn't know from one chapter to the next how it would turn out. Was this Arlen Pickett a liar? A fool? Did he have something to hide? Or was he psychopath? It's not everyone's midlife crisis that gets them shagging the client and taking up with a violent ex-cop. Drove me toward the end, when all was revealed and Pavlenko magics all the plot lines into a satisfying finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will make you miss your stop 11 Oct 2013

A page-turner of a thriller and at the same time a playful exploration of ideas about the unreliability of any narrative and the blurry edges between truth and fiction. The central character is utterly convincing - and convinces you - and then gradually it all gets rather more messy and complicated. Nicely judged style, literate but light of touch. Plenty of twists. A wry sense of humour leavens the darker passages. Kept me engrossed and now waiting for another from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars original voice with sharp sense of humour 30 Sep 2013
Picked Pickett because of the title and ended up reading it in one go. Usually more into Scandicrime or hardboiled US crime and nature stories but this a character with a twist. Not so much because plot as the unique outlook of the lead. Well worth a go. Will definitely check out Pavlenko's next book.
