Format:Paperback
Titan continue their line of novels based upon the original Star Trek series with #18 The Final Nexus by Gene DeWeese. This novel is a sequel to book #1 in this series, the excellent Chain Of Attack.
The Enterprise responds to a distress call from the U.S.S. Cochise, which is monitoring one of the interstellar gates that the Enterprise fell through in book one. However, unlike their first trip through, the gate seems to be affecting anyone near it by inducing total fear, paranoia and suicidal tendencies.
With more of the gates opening across Federation space the crew attempt to discover what is going on. As they investigate they find that the whole network is beginning to break down and there is a possibility that a malevolent alien entity, perhaps the one that was responsible for initiating the chain of attack in novel 1, is trying to get a foothold in our galaxy.
Like the previous novel, this one reads like a well crafted second part of an episode of classic Trek. The pace is rapid, keeping the reader interested and the book itself can be done cover to cover in a few hours. There is an interesting group of supporting characters in the crew of the Cochise, especially the science officer Esther Ansfield and the alien Kremastor. The fleet admirals are a little generic and are not really a sufficient foil for Kirk's attitudes towards the sometimes rigid nature of Starfleet Command.
The conclusions about the origin of the gate system, why all the wars happened and exactly what is happening to cause all the destruction is well handled and imparted to the reader in a very classic Trek way. Like Chain Of Attack, the end is quite fast but at least gives you a satisfactory finish.
A good read and definitely one for any classic Trek collection.

this book starts exiting enough but soon you are caught up in all sorts of alien mysteries i was a little lost and prefer a more human kind of story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sequel to #32, "Chain of Attack". 18 Jan 2003
By James Yanni - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"Chain of Attack" stands well on its own, and it is not necessary to read this book to "complete" the story told there. This book, on the other hand, would make significantly less sense if one had not previously read "Chain of Attack". Less, but not none; it is possible to read this book without that one, and simply to assume that the backstory is one that hasn't been told. This story can, in fact, stand on its own.

Which is good, because it's an extremely good story; the regular characters are handled well, a couple of new characters that are added for spice are interesting and worthwhile, and the story itself is a fast-moving, well-paced story that is very well written. It's one of the best "Enterprise saves the universe as we know it" stories that I've ever read; it actually manages to be almost plausible.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sequel to Chain of Attack 30 Nov 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Sequels in the Star Trek universe have become more popular since the success of the movies.

Thus, this novel was written as a sequel to the moderately successful Chain of Attack (#32).

If you liked Chain of Attack, then read this one.
