There are precious few books about the remarkable genius that was Jacques Tati. This book offers an insight into the nuances of the small number of films that he produced in his life. There are splendid revelations but the book meanders hopelessly, skipping from one film to the next looking for common threads. It is this themed approach that eventually frustrates the reader. A simpler film by film analysis is abandoned for a more arty and intellectually challenging approach. And at the end of it the painstaking analysis adds little to the humour that each of these films is endowed with.

One of the best books I've ever read- Period! 13 Sep 2000

Anybody who has every experienced that odd feeling of fascination while watching a Tati film will find Chion's cinematic psychotherapy a beautiful treasure. Chion is a wonderful poet and a brilliant film theorist; I would expect nothing less to pay tribute to Tati's magnificent artistry.
